I find it fun, and why not earn some money in the process

 

I found that if you can't handle stress, you will never be in business. It is fun when you are paid and everything is ok, but what if things are not going well? Most people can't handle it and quit, right?

 

A)So I can work till four in the morning and sleep till noon

B) So I can sit in my big comfortable chair with my laptop and watch my roommates come and go at all hours of the day and night to wait tables.

C) So I can rub it in all of the peoples faces who told me to "get a real job"

 

These reasons are interesting. However let me offer the other side of the coin. According to Michael Gerber, author of the e-Myth the vast majority of people who are in their "own" business actually loose money. Hour for hour working for a company with benefits, vacation, and perks most often is better than being self-employed. I figure you have to NET out double your salary to equal just break even.

Gerber also points out that most people simply trade having one boss for many - every paying customer. Most small business owners really only create a job for themselves, not a business. The skills to run a business are very different than doing something, no matter how good or professional a person is.

That said, I've done both. My reason for preferring self-employment is the joy in creating something and being responsible for it. Success or failure rests on me alone - which is a double edged sword. I think most people that are in it for the long haul find reasons like that besides the money.

Well, interesting point! I am sure most of us won't bother to be even here if it doesn't bring money But I can believe that some people that just started are not making any money yet. And I also agree that in some cases, it would be even more profitable to work for big companies that provide benefits like insurance etc. But! I wouldn't "trade" my benefits as a small business owner that are:

1) I don't have to get up at 7 am each morning
2) can schedule my vacation at any time
3) I am the the boss
4) I can spend more time with my kids

I'm an entrepreneur because I've dreamed this job since I was child.
Always I've dreamed to create something of useful for customer, workers (more job) and so on.

In addition, this has been the right job for me, because I'm a student (I'm taking my graduate degree in management next october), so I could organize my days with great flexibility.

but I found this reason is one of the coolest.

That used to be a great reason however i got a new computer case (7 case fans) and now my legs get too cold.

So my reason would be, because i love business. Pure and simple.

 

at 16 i realized corporate america was not for me...I am not a butt kisser and I hate politics. Also, I am a hard worker...I realized I could be working for myself, just as hard as working for someone else

I am now 34 and been my own boss since 18 (part time) and full time on my own with employees since 22

 

i started my own business to give me the opportunity to have options for my future. i joined digitalpoint to hopefully network and discuss with like-minded people.

 

Working my way through college, want to be my own boss, funding/capital for much larger projects.
