One has to pimp your website to get more traffic which equals to $$$ The bottom line is , it takes hard work and creativity to work on the SEO game. You have to pimp your website just like any good marketer. The best tool is the free google webmaster tool. Plain simple explanation. Patience is the keyword.

I agree, there are many ways to increase your SEO, using words that are porbably blacklisted would get yourself banned from everywhere.
I agree with the others. I think that Google can now tell "spam" like pages from "good" pages and ban the bad sites. You can do lots of things to improve your rankings. However this does not mean floading the website with relevant keywords. It is much better to post comments on forums, blogs or to write articles. And also - as you said it is all about patience and good and unique content.
I think it's pretty ignorant to say that there is no point in trying to optimize a site and just to let search engines do their thing. Anyone with a decent knowledge of SEO knows that a few SEO tricks here and there, used sparingly will result in better rankings. That's not rocket science. There's a difference between spamming and promotion. However, some people just don't understand when promotion is ok.
What are the banned words and how can you check that the sites are blacklisted? What does blacklisted mean? Does it mean that google won't display your site?
It is pretty hard to rank in competitive key words using only google webmaster tool it is maybe good for long tail terms but for hot key words you have to flex the google guideliness
