Proxies are not illegal, If they are used for illegal actions then you have problems. But you could set your proxy up so it keeps logs of everything ( including IP's ) then if someone was to abuse your proxie then you could work with the police / agencies involved in any legal case.

But having a proxy itself is fully legal. I suppose also you could add " CAPTCHA " requests each time people use the proxy ( for the first time on each new site they visit ) This would stop certain ways of abusing the proxy. But there are to many things to be able to stop them all im afraid.

I keep logs of everything. Typically Depending on how popular your proxy gets your going to want a HDD with lots of gigs on it and a fast write speed.
I have about 20 proxies on my server which all log to /home/proxy-logs/ ,
in there is the storage for all logs. I use Glype which has built in Logging feature and control panel to view the logs. So if I ever get a abuse complaint from the FBI or something I won't be in hell digging out a 50 Gig messy base64 apache access log, I will ready with logs all decrypted and archived by dates. ;)
Now as I was saying about the HDD, depending how long you think keeping the logs for is up to you becuase they can start taking up alot of space on the HD, I think 30 days is long enough for a legit abuse complaint. At which I purge them all.

Nice one dollar...exactly what i was looking for...thanks for replying to my question.

I dont want to hound you, but you mentioned 50gb...im looking into either one of these hosts:

    Hawk host - Standard VPS = $30pm
    http://www.hawkhost.com/VPS/compare

    http://www.techentrance.com/proxy-hosting.html

I also have to move my filehost website as its using too much resources...would i be able to put both my proxies AND file host on say a dedicated server? Would they run ok side by side or is it best to keep em seperate?

If so, i was looking at hawk host again:
    Xeon 3050 = $159pm
    http://www.hawkhost.com/Dedicated/lowend

    What you guys reckon?

    Cheers as always!

I personally would run them separate just because proxy's tend to get wild.. possibly put the file host on a dedicated and a proxy on a VPS, or two separate VPS. You could also just attempt to get a VPS put them both on it and see what happens - worse case scenario is you upgrade.

Some proxies dont even have log features. Like PHPROXY and CGIPROXY, would you guys know how to keep track of logs to be written down somewhere?
