One of my clients is currently using Yahoo! as their web host. My god... I have never seen a company who's mySQL databases are down as often as this is. At least twice a week I'm held back for a few hours of work because the database just isn't operational. This time I've been waiting for a full 24 hours for it to come back up. Not to mention their customer service is impossible to get a hold of. Growl.
my god NO!!! NOT ANOTHER OVERSELLER AAGH Seriously.. Hostmonster sucks the big one. As for the mysql database problem, have you tried using redundant checks? Attempting to connect to the database 3 times before throwing an error? That might help live applications. Try to tell your client to switch.
Yeah, I emailed him a lengthy explanation today as to why, and who I recommend. I've personally been using Dreamhost for about 3 years now, and I have yet to have a single problem with them. They are always great to me.
Just in case you might be looking... I've been overall pleased with my hosting through Powweb, but I wouldn't recommend switching to Powweb, or starting new with them, as sites have gone down mildly frequently (4-5x/year) in my 7 year tenure with them (hard to believe it's been that long). A friend of mine hosts through GoDaddy and says in three years, his sites have never gone down. Is he exaggerating? Anyone else host through GoDaddy?
I have dedicated servers through PEER1 and the network hasnever been down for more than a few minutes in the three years since they bought Interland/Dialtone out. They're not a cheap solution (about $375 per server) but you get what you pay for. Customer service is 24/7 via phone and I've never dealt with more brilliant support staff than PEER1. If you're only doing smalltime hosting, I'd recommend HostGator. Brent (the owner) is totally dedicated to providing a superior experience. oh, and Yahoo can't do anything right. Even their fantasy sports are buggy
Shared hosting or dedicated ? Big hosting firms could be down due to overcrowded by accounts so better move to small one who can serve you more personally.
Unfortubately Yahoo is a company that does not focus on its hosting services and this combined with a very large customer base and some overcrowded servers leads to a bad experience for the customer who is expecting more. I suggest going with one of the many smaller hsoting companies like pro host said. Going with a smaller host you will get personal service and remember this one thing...you get what you pay for.
I used them for hosting 4 years ago and the same problem with the database. I thought they would fix that problem by now.
I hosted with Godaddy.com and it went down a few times a day. I think it was my shared server was overcrowded. I am currently with hostgator.com and could not be happier!
Then you would really enjoy their bait and switch domains they sell! Bought somes domains for $1.99 only to get renewal notices for $35 each!
Yahoo should just stick with everything but hosting and domains. There are better hosting CO made for that.
I used yahoo webhosting for a few years (don't know how I managed to stay with them for so long) the support is terrible. Being such a large company they should be more effort into it
If you want performance and reliability and can only afford a shared host, then go for http://www.medialayer.com. Yahoo is a bad host... very surprised they are.
Im glad i didnt go with Yahoo when I was buying hosting before. I went with Surpass Hosting then Blue Host.
