Last month I had several domains stolen from my GoDaddy account. I am not sure how they got my password but I suspect they gained access to my gmail account because the warning e-mails that the domain was being transferred were deleted. GoDaddy was no help in getting the domains back so I don’t want to do business with them in the future. So now I am wondering where I can transfer my domains that they will be secure. Anyone have positive experiences? Ideally I would like somewhere that will not transfer the domain out without me faxing them my ID or something. Thanks, Steven
Wow, that is scary. I have used GoDaddy for many years, and no problems. I did have a gmail account that was hacked once, and finally got Google to shut it down. Fortunately I did not use gmail for any sensitive accounts like banking, domaining, etc. I am more apt to say change from gmail to yahoo, as I don't have a lot of faith in gmail after that. www.domaindiscover.com will not change a registrant without a faxed ID. You, or someone else, can change all other info, but registrant will not be changed without sending them ID. It's a shame that GoDaddy couldn't be more helpful, but I suppose since the transfer request came from your gmail, and that was registered with them, they accept it as valid. Sorry you lost your domains. Have you tried doing a "whois" to see who has them? Maybe won't do any good, since it's probably going to have a bogus identity.
wow, i use Gmail and Godaddy both and has no problem up to now. can you share the domain if you are talking the truth?
ImproveYourResume.com 320by480.com etc. I don’t know what you think I would gain by posting that my domains were stolen and asking for advice on protecting them in the future. After doing some research I found that GoDaddy offers what they call ‘Protected Registration’ but since I had the problem with them before I really don’t want to work with them again. Does anyone else offer a similar service? Thanks, Steven
Not meaning to burst your bubble, but I'd like to offer some realistic views. I speak from having worked in the registrar business. A registrar can have as many security measures as possible. But they'll hardly do any good if the user doesn't also protect their login details and their email address. That being said, though, it's important to choose a registrar who can assist proactively. No registrar on earth can guarantee they'll get the domain name back, but many will make an effort to try. In any case, I recommend Moniker, mainly from my dealings with them.
as I see that the domain still in Godaddy. So what you need to do is: Provide Godday your invoice (when you purchased the domain last time) Ask them to recover it for you If not, move it to whonami and get domain protection also
If the domain name has not been moved away from Godaddy, then I think there is still some hope of getting them back. I've seen a thread on DP before where it is explained in detail just what you need to do. For one, don't just take no for an answer. As long as you did NOT sell the domain and get scammed in the process, you might be able to dispute the transfer. You will have to play hardball with them, from what I read...maybe start dropping the word "lawyer". You will need to ask to speak to supervisors and to the legal department and such. As for where to go to from here (registrarwise)...I agree with Dave Zan...go with a registrar who will be proactive...one who will fight in your corner when such a thing happens - because no registrar can guarantee that it will NOT happen. It's how they handle things AFTER it happens that counts, I would think. . .
