Why does everyone mention blog comments as a good way to get backlinks?

For already tried getting backlinks for several of my websites through Wordpress blogs and Askimet always seems to pick up my website. If you try to leave more than one comment a day with the same website you'll usually get banned within 24 hours. Even if you leave just one comment a day they may even pick up your site. I don't know why everyone mentions this because it only works for a day or two!

Nobody suggests that you should spam irrelevant blogs! Please don't do this - if Akismet is flagging your site, that's a sign that you're doing something very wrong.

Besides, most links from wordpress blogs will have rel='nofollow' so will not contribute to your PR.

People suggest commenting on blog posts as a way to indicate that you're a part of the conversation, and ought to be listened to. You need to make extraordinary contributions - comments which induce readers of the larger blog to click through to your own.

1 comment on 1 dofollow blog is adequate, you do not need to spam them everyday

Yes, but I'm the FIRST person here who actually mentioned that. And "no" I was not spamming any blogs. I was leaving about 3 or 4 comments a day and was immediately picked up. I wouldn't consider that excessive or spamming but I guess Askimet does.

Greg, I have never been banned on leaving a comment. Its not about shear amounts, its about relevance. You don't need to comment on a blog more than once usually. Google is not going to count the second link as heavily. Spend some real time answering the post with a genuine answer. Don't include links in your comment section either. You could try something like:

    Jason | SEO

However, I usually just search for sites that use CommentLuv. CommentLuv parses your sites RSS feed and automatically displays a link to your most recent post with the title as the anchor text.

3/4 comments a day on 1 blog is excessive!

First of all, make sure you're leaving quality, relevant comments, not just one-liners to get links and clicks.

If you're leaving several comments a day, only put your link in the first comment and use the field designated for website links. That way you look less like a spammer. Hopefully, you're participating in a comment conversation on a blog with many comments. Don't just comment on other people's comments. If people aren't responding to you, stop commenting because you're being ignored and no one is going to click on your links.

When people leave me good comments, but end with "visit my site for more information: link", I edit out the entire sentence, link included, because it's spammy. On the other hand, when people include the link in the text of the comment it appears to be a resource meant to help readers, so I leave it.

It's all in your approach. When you focus solely on building links, you teeter on the spam line. Focus on providing useful information and provide the link as an accessory.

yep leaving more than one commment can be seen as spam, not unless you are replying to a comment someone else left after yours.

Hi Puzzle! Thanks for the interesting thread post on how to "spam" the comment sections of blogs. Inserting your url within your answer isn't the smartest idea in my opinion. Many webmasters will immediately see this as spam without even reading what your comment says. Haven't you ever noticed that a lot of Wordpress blogs have an area where you can add your website address?

If you comment more then once on a single site then it is considered as spamming. Please don’t spam and I would suggest to comment in dofollow blogs. This will benefit you.

Your link to your site inside blog comments does not matter much to Google! It matters more to some search engines, but definitely not Google. It does not matter if the blog is DoFollow or NoFollow because Google is not looking into it seriously. I posted so many great comments in DoFollow blogs, and they did nothing to boost my page ranking. I looked up DoFollow blog lists on Google, and commented on hundreds of blogs. If blog commenting mattered a lot to Google page ranking, wouldn't a lot of people have high page ranks by now since there are quite a few of blogs that are DoFollow with 5+ page ranking.

Yes... write a quality comment.. discuss it with the owner..
If you just want to make backlink, find only dofolow, but if you want to discuss the article, it's no matter if you are commenting on dofolow or nofolow
