Facebook backlinks?

I note Facebook is a #9 page rank. Asking whether or not listing your URL in a FaceBook profile would be worth it, as it would act as the all important, ubiquitious backlink, based on their high PR (although we all realize PR isn't the main thing to base things upon). And does anyone know if G. spiders FB thoroughly?

I never tried it, but make sure you have your profile is set to allow public view.

I have several applications that have their about pages indexed by Google. I'm pretty sure Google doesn't index profiles though, no matter how public your profile is set.

A quick search reveals that Facebook Pages are also indexed :D

As far as I know Facebook is nofollow. That being said, I have had good success generating traffic by creating a Facebook group and then networking.

I actually can find my facebook profile via google. I can't seem to find whether it is nofollow or not though. The source for the facebook page is ... strange.

Your questions can all be answered by simple observation.

Set your own profile to public, then LOG OUT and visit it - you don't get the actual profile, rather a short summary, which doesn't have your posted links and so on.

Links are generally not nofollow (so for instance my friendfeed activity in my minifeed), though links in wall posts are. Having said that, this is pretty much irrelevant unless facebook decides to open up a little bit more.

So if you're looking for google juice, don't bother. On the other hand, you may get a slight traffic boost from putting up your URL (if your friends are interested, that is).

Oh, and remember that high PR means .nothing if your profile page is one of 50mm.

Facebook does use nofollow and it's useless for backlinks. Ozan makes sense in what he says.

I was curious about FB for linkjuice and really appreciated all this input. For whatever reason FB decided to use nofollow I guess...that's their choice. Although I then have to wonder why people use AdSense in their dev apps? It doesn't make sense. Or am I missing yet another aspect?

    A few reasons:

    • Unlike profile pages, applications ARE indexed if they are designed to be (ie not requiring log-in or installation of the app). The links, like most facebook links, are in fact followed. From my observations, it is only wall posts that have rel='nofollow'.
    • From memory there is a tricky way to feed adsense relevant terms using two iframes
    • Many app developers are happy to annoy their users with irrelevant ads if it means they could make a buck

Posting link in facebook is wasting of time. Google do not consider it and it will give you some traffic if you put the relevant one only.

Facebook and Orkut both are no follow.

For anybody else who's tempted to believe or perpetuate this proposition, why don't you just go into facebook and have a look?

Links generally are NOT nofollow. Wall posts are nofollow. The websites in the "information" section are nofollow. Everything else, as far as I have seen, is freely followed. Not that it often matters, as explained above.

It astounds me how readily people will listen to speculation on forums etc rather than spending the 10 seconds it takes to definitively determine the answer for themselves.
