When submitting to directories, occasionally I see a list on the sidebar that I assume is managed by the same webmaster as the one that I was considering making a submission to. Is it sound SEO to submit a site to several directories that are all managed by the same webmaster or will this be frowned on the search engines? What, if any, would be the negative effect of such a circumstance?
It would depend upon the site(s) you are talking about but it sounds like the placements you are referring to are paid advertisements and not an indication of site ownership.
There are directory networks too and you shouldn't be concerned unless the directories are on the same IP. As YMC said they might be link exchanges or paid links too.
and always remember a competitor could submit you to these sites also so I would imagine the worst that could happen to you is the value from a link would be discounted
Just 2 things-- (1) If dirs are good then go for it. (2) If one person owns many dirs, then there are more chances of dirs placed on one IP or few Ips. If Dirs are crap, better to avoid 98% of them.
This is another myth and I've seen lots of "specialists" talking about. There is no real evidence that having a few directories on the same IP would have any sort of negative effect on the links submitted or on the quality of the directory. Just keep in mind that around 75% if not more of the websites on the internet use shared hosting. Obviously I'm not talking about the spammy networks of hundreds of directories on the same IP which are crap indeed... Hope this helps, Thanks
Let me see if I am understanding what you are saying. If a directory shows good PR and appears to categorize their submissions and screen the sites properly they are worthy of submission?
Have you tried placing directories/websites on same IP and then doing SEO or Link Building for them? Have you done some personal tests? Guys just don't simply cut paste whats other may have said or advised, there is till date no real tests to prove that those IP related statements are correct. Please remember (as loredan said) that around 70-80% of the websites on the internet use shared hosting. Anyways I would advice the op to stay away from those cross linked crap network of 100-200 directories that sell email addresses, have adsense filled up and are spammy.
I think that the directories on same ip myth was one recycled for the use of seo companies and hosting companies if you dont interlink then as humm said there is no difference in being on a shared host (which a lot of sites are on) dont need to be a rocket scientist to see a spammy directory a lot of the lists also provide sortable ip data also so you can even check for the networks and see if they interlink
Humm. Mr_Kumar own more than his share of directories. My point of same IP was probably not put correctly. There are directory networks hosted on same IP and they also share the same database. This would DEFINITELY not work. I agree with you and loredan that more than 70% websites are sharing their IPs with each other. But they are not cross linking to each other and they have highly different content. It's not 'copy pasting' (it's not cut paste in anyway ), it's common sense.
I wouldn't waste my time if they are selling site wide links - check and see if the same links are repeated across all of the pages. I would also avoid cross-linked directories regardless of how/where they are hosted. Negative effects? Consider what your inbound link profile looks like.
So many directories interlink to each other through ads and partnerships and listings in each other, whether they are owned by the same person or not. To Google, this could look like a link exchamge network.
