Maybe it makes perfect sense to you all but, i was struggling for days to figure out what is what.
Namely in the analytics report i am seeing three parameters for the traffic.

    1. Direct Traffic
    2. Search Engines
    3. Referring Sites

What is what here. Except the Search Engines i am very confusing about the other two factors. What precisely you mean when you say "referring sites" or "direct traffic" ?

    Thanks

    Direct Traffic :
Direct access includes all persons who have:
    1. Typed directly address in their browser.
    2. Added to the favorite site, and clicked on this favorite.
    3. Followed a link in an e-mail not tracked.
This data is useful to know your reputation. Indeed, you are more experienced and more people will directly enter the name of your website, click on your feeds or link to your favorites.

    Search Engines :
This statistic is used to measure the number of visits from search engines. This is an important source of traffic for a blog.

    Referring Sites :
A referral occurs when any hyperlink is clicked that takes a user to a new page of file in any website - the originating site is the referrer.

When a user arrives at your site, referral information is captured, which includes the referrer URL if available, any search terms that were used, time and date information and more.

Also if you want a more useful metric click "all traffic sources". It is the most useful (for me) part of Analytics. So when you see all traffic source drill down "Google (organic)" them look above and use the pulldown to "keywords". See what keywords people are using to get to your site. This works with all Ses.

Hint: Examine the other options in the pull-down after the first drilldown.
