Your reply is like a point scoring thing, see i never get that, mikey im 31 yrs old dude, im all calmed down, i went round talking like a prat when i was a kid then i grew up and calmed down and learned to respect people. You sound really immature, its like a battle for you, im not here for approval for you, why do you guys chase me around the forum? Seriously i dont get you, your in such a rush to prove yourself. Each and everytime i get grief off you guys i always stay reasonable and try and get on with you to keep peace but its something beyond that. I even recently expressed myself regarding the penalisation of the latest directory, but you come chasing me for trouble again. You do try and bait me, i know that for sure, i even mostly dont reply to spiderman, jamie, you etc and you guys choose to come looking for me to try and rile things up. Your all jumped up and i dunno, i just dont like it, you and jamie and sm have lost the plot, its not about business to you, its about hassling people. This is crazy, what is your aim with me? ive been here since 2006 and got on fine with people, since last year theres you and a number of others intent on causing trouble. How can i avoid you if im stalked on the forum? How can I sort them by PR. to into this? i mean i did nothing wrong, i prmoted nothing, i gave no advice, all i did was answer the OP.
Agree with that, I'm surprised anybody still sorts by PR. Yes backward logic if your site is for the canny submitters. What about the visitors? I'd hope interested people would come back to a category and see new content which has been recently submitted - as they do on other types of website. What is the point of burying new content? That's what concerns me about hits, it can be manipulated, but It's worth considering.
I really don't think there is a wrong choice in this, just a personal choice. There is a lot of merit in sorting by dates as you do and your points on it have me considering this once again. One thing which I also like about sorting by hits is that it ties it into the site of the day feature I provide.
I'd never thought about the daily listing hits increasing the generic hits for a submission. I'd see this as another way hits can be manipulated.
I don't really see that as a manipulation. All listings have the option for placement on the main page to gain exposure to traffic. It that traffic finds the site interesting they will click on it to visit. It is just a vote and the hits that are counted are limited by ip. So one vote for one visitor for a certain time frame. Offering featured links could be seen as manipulation of a listing placement also.
From a submitters point of view this is only my opinion on the matter and don't want to argue Sorting Alphabetically - It's not fair that a site is buried at the bottom just because the first letter of the company name happens to be Z. This encourages submitters to buy another domain called aaaaaasite.com put their site info on it and then submit to be at the top. Sorting by PR - Google penalized the PR of many good sites due to link buying/selling and many are faking their rank or buying dropped domains, also PR rank is 4 months old so it is not a true indicator of a quality site. This encourages submitters to buy high PR dropped domains or 301 redirect to fake PR and then submit to be at the top. Sorting by Date - Depending on how you sort, new first or new last. Quality sites get lost in the mix. There is nothing one can do to improve their placement. Sorting by Hits - Hits can be manipulated by a few desperate webmasters, but this option at least gives a quality site a chance at the top if visitors find it useful. This encourages submitters to continue making quality content to improve their placement.
You guys do realize that you can sort by any number of multiple characteristics right? order by pagerank desc, title asc, hits desc that would sort by page rank with pagerank being highest point, then all listings of that same exact pagerank alphabetically and then alphabetically by hits listings 1 - pr: 5, title: abcd, hits: 50 listings 2 - pr: 5, title: abc, hits: 20 listings 3 - pr: 4, title: abcdef, hits: 30 output order to the directory would be: listing 2 listing 1 listing 3
If "listings 3" had many more hits than the rest of the listings which means it is the most popular site according to your visitors it would still rank 3. So to be highly ranked in that directory I would have to buy a high PR domain name that starts with the letter "A"
Oh ok, I thought most directories already sorted using multiple factors. Just wanted to point out that ranking by PR or alphabetically first can be easily manipulated by simply buying a dropped high PR "A" domain and will give these scammers another reason to.
It's good to know that quality directories actually check to see if the PR is real, bought, or fake when reviewing a site. I have come across a few that don't bother to check, but won't name names. They know who they are
No prob. At least you learned a little more out of it, which was the intended purpose of my post And like CReed said, better directories WON'T let that happen Rob
