Same Content in two Different Domain Names - HARMFUL or ADVANTAGEOUS?

Discussion in 'Search Engine Optimization' started by Alan Smith, Jul 8, 2008.

I have one domain name www.xyz.com containing pages like HOME, ABOUT US, PRODUCTS, SERVICES, CONTACT US.

Now i also own another domain that is www.xzy.co.uk. i have uploaded same pages with same content and details in this domain.

Hence my two domains “www.xyz.com” and “www.xzy.co.uk” are having the same thing even the design and all the stuffs are same.

Whether it is harmful or advantageous from the Google point of view.

I request all SEO Experts to guide me.

    Thanks in advance

I think you should avoid a duplicate content penalty as there is no duplicate content.

Its not good if you have two different sites with same content. its harmful. content should be unique in both sites. if you are not going to change content you can redirect one site to another.

It can never be advantageous. if you want to promote both of your sites you should use different contents on both the sites. Since google will recognize it easily and will not give any importance to newer one, because of your old domain have the same thing to display.

I suggest you have one domain redirect to the other because Google could slap you with a duplicate content penalty. It would be better for you if you either did that or changed the content of the website.

I would avoid duplicate content, but I have seen it work for some people. You would be better off in my opinion to focus your energy on 1 site and use the other as a redirect.

301 redirect is a good option to avoid getting penalized for duplicate content. Alternatively and provided you have time, you can improvise the same content and thus make it unique.

There is absolutely no imagination whatsoever in any of these replies.

The op actually had a really good question. I would love to know the result myself.

My guess is that the site with the better juice would outrank the other site for every potential kw, if all things are identical. There would be no penalty whatsoever. This would actually be a potential advantage because you now have 2 sites ranking in serps for the same kw's. Very interesting.

You should redirect one of the domains to the other one. This way you are not trying to rank two domains just one.

If the content is literally the same then it's a duplicate content. Don't do that or else your site will get ban.
