What would you lot say are the top 5 best niches for directories.

Turn back the clock say 2 years, which niche of directory would you pick?

Which do you think would be the most successful?

Also what is the sort of "going rate" at the moment for any of these "niche" directories?

Would love to hear all your thoughts :)

I wonder if Script Directories would not beat all the above?

It seems like the popular categories for niche directories match up well with what I think would be the higher paying adsense topics.

    Is that just coincidence?

    Doubtful.

The problem with many of the niches mentioned is that high Adsense payouts have caused them to be crowded with really crummy MFA, ebay aggregators, and other affiliate sales sites. It can be quite the challenge to create a quality directory in those topics - quality being the key word in that sentence.

Here are the most popular niche categories at web-directories.ws. This should give you a good idea of what niche directories are already out there.

Note: the totals shown do not include the directories in the sub-categories.

Can 'regional' directories be considered a 'niche'? UK and USA are the most popular in that case.

WOW !! what a great response.

Hypothetically if i were to find a large country that is currently its internet prescence is just establishing but growing very very rapidly, what would your advice be.

Where should i start, and what ways are the best ways to monetise the site??

No its not. The high paying adsense keywords are a reflection of strong promotion by businesses in these sectors.

Just think, we make a sale and make $xx. A lwyer gets a client.....a travel operator sells a holiday....an agent sells a house...think how much these deals are worth in comparison.

Thats why I reckon these niches are popular.

For the record - and for those unfamiliar with coding such as php, the letters in bold mean "does not equal". So therefore Rob is saying that the popular niches are not necessarily the successful ones.

I imagine your hinting at India maybe?

And theres some confusion as people (or some) get confused over these large developing countries and the growth mentioned.

Most of a country like India or China most likely wont have access to the Internet, so its a small percentage who are actually online.

So say if you tried adsense on it, the payout would be pretty low, theres an understanding that the following countries have the higher payouts UK, USA, Canada, Australia etc, because the countries are rich and lead to results for the high paying advertisers.

So if you want to target an Asian country are you completely clear on what and who your targetting?

And if your talking about China its a whole different story altogether, China's internet world is very different from a lot of the rest of the world.

You know when i last checked (about 2 years ago) looking into chinese wholesalers, they were still hugely under developed with regards to what some take for granted, things like credit cards and being able to accomodate them.

Maybe its a bit different now.

But theres still much misunderstanding regarding those 2 super sized countries.

Maybe your talking about an african country and im rabbling for nothing.:)

Note: Even if numbers are substantial for internet use, thats not the same as people actually being connected, many will use internet cafes and wont have an opportunity to get the household online yet.

Niches by definition are not popular sites unless you drill down into the specialty. My niche is probate and estate settlement law. If you tap in estate settlement I am #1 but am I popular. no.
