Your traffic will come from people searching for keywords that your rank for.

hahahah. this isn't meant to be mean, but that's one of the funniest responses i've ever heard.

    I definitely agree with this.

What I do is analyze my sub-pages. I see what keywords they rank for, then try to optimize the keywords and make them rank higher. If you have many sub-pages, this will be an ongoing process.

The key to SEO is knowing that it takes time. SEO is not a magic bullet, it is lots of continuing work. You may rank #1 in a week but a week later you may be dropped to #31.

In the mean time, you can try many of the book marking social sites to see instant but not as good traffic.

You could also advertise on related niche sites to see more targeted traffic quicker. The problem with that is that if the site you wish to advertise on has great traffic, the ads will be costly.

After onsite optimization is done, it is time to move into link building. And this never ends :)

I think the key is staying three months ahead of the game.

Work now, expect to see the results in three months time, and don't be afraid to see the site not performing as well as you hoped during the initial stages.

Snap decisions in SEO are such a bad thing.

Make an effort to network in your niche, even if it means simply assembling a spreadsheet of contacts for use at a later date.

Constantly developing good content and good backlinks is absolutely critical. The web is constantly growing and so is the competition irrespective of the niche you occupy so there's definitely no end point as the others have alluded.

Another component of achieving the end goal of building traffic is to have content or tools that people will want to refer/use on an ongoing basis. This ensures that for each visitor you attract they keep coming back. That's the most sustainable way to consistently build traffic.
