How does Yahoo differ from Google?

Discussion in 'Yahoo' started by DinoCagney, Jul 8, 2008.

I got into SEO for around 8 months now, and I've been paying attention pretty much only to Google....

I just checked the placements for my targeted keywords on Yahoo... and there are huge differences in the results!

Does anyone know what Yahoo is after as far as requirements for high rankings?

How do they differ from Google?

    Thanks!!!!!!

Ranking on Yahoo is still pretty much the same as it was earlier. Get tons of backlinks and you will rank higher. Google on the other hand is more sophisticated and takes into consideration other factors as well..

Yahoo seems to take longer to get listed but most of your back links are counted. Google has a special algorithm that gives value to some back links while almost totally ignoring others. Since Google is much more widely used, they are the one that most webmaster go by.

The downside of Google is that with such power they tend to try to control what webmasters can and can't do. Yahoo does not wield as much power and so they do not yet try to control what you do with your site.

I always wondered whether it's worth being concerned about getting a high ranking in Yahoo or MSN, or just concentrate on Google. Always seem to get good results with them, but struggle with Google (typical eh).

Yahoo is really different in google. Yahoo uses different algorithm in ranking a site and it's more on content not like like that is more on backlinks.

Right now since Yahoo keeps on updating, I see some of my sites on top page results using my targeted keywords. And Google keeps on fluctuating my site's keywords/rankings. Sigh.

How are they different? Yahoo! has much better results! :D

In terms of SEO, they are different because they seem to base their rankings more on META tags, header text, and anchor text on backlinks. Those three things seem to be their primary ranking methodologies, from my experience.

    Well, here's my 2 cents:

Google has a jump on Yahoo and I think has a lot more competition to take into account.
Yahoo, it may take longer to get better rankings in Yahoo (so you say) but Google has a lot more competition, therefore Yahoo must be easier to get a better PR.

I don't think Backlinks help in yahoo/msn as much as they do in google. I got to #1 for my search terms in yahoo/msn in the first month (without many backlinks at all) but am still only #5 in google. I think yahoo is more focussed on onpage optimisation

Yahoo prioritize websites that are listed in their paid listing. They uses different algorithm in ranking a site and it's more on content not like like that is more on backlinks.

Yahoo has the largest network on the internet and it places a value on intellectual property.

    Dear DinoCagney,

It's a difficult one to answer since both companies are positioned very very differently; on face value, Yahoo looks hip and colorful, whereas Google looks simple and elegant

Google is more thoughtful and strategic, Yahoo is flamboyant and more reactive.

Google concentrates on value added solutions rather than presentation and Yahoo concentrates on superb presentation followed by value creation.

Both Google and Yahoo are important when it comes to SEO and one should exploit both to have a better ranking in the search engines.

    Regards

    Tehmina
