Hello Guys I dont know whether this is the right place to post. doing it here as it is related to blogging! I am having problem in installing wordpress!! I have a blog at www.xyz.com (Blog is installed in the root directory) I want to create a subdomain named www.abc.xyz.com (install wordpress for this.) My hosting company says all I ahve to do is create a directory named "abc" and the subdomain will be created. I created a new directory "abc" installed word press in it by going to www.xyz.com/abc NOw when I try to access www.abc.xyz.com it goes to www.xyz.com automatically!! Dont know why this happens?? Can some one please help me Thanks Shoban
Sometimes subdomain names take up to an hour to become active. Well they do on my hosting, but if it still doesn't work, then you will have to contact your hosting company. My hosting has live support that is very helpful. Good luck! Joel
Uhh ... no. You have to create the sub-domain and redirect it to your directory. Are you using cPanel? Off-topic > Cool. You have catch-all DNS
I am not using cPanel ... its much easier in cPanel.. this is another one..a d very confusing... I have manged DNS (add a records, cname etc) for www.abc.com (which is my new domain) I have hosting for www.xyz.com .. the peculiar thing is ..... I can create any subdomains .. like www.test.xyz.com and when I create a flder named "test" it works fine.. I am having problem only when there is wordpress installation ......
So ... You've set up the sub-domain, got the directory, and WordPress screwed it up? The only thing I can think of it's probably WP's .htaccess file. But it shouldn't be a problem You have mentioned a new abc . com domain, is this to replace the abc. xyz.com sub-domain mentioned earlier?
yes,... www.abc.com is to replace www.abc.xyz.com so when people type in www.abc.com they should see the site for www.abc.xyz.com Thank u very much for the response... how can .htaccess do it? Subdomains work fine without wp installation .... if I instal wp in www.abc.xyz.com .. it gets reidrected to www.xyz.com :-( Arrrrrrg!!
First Login to your wordpress admin area and go to General Options. And then change both WordPress address (URL): and Blog address (URL): to www.abc.xyz.com. If you cannot access to wordpress admin .. you can either access directly to database through phpmyadmin or you will have to reinstall your wordpress and make sure you type www.abc.xyz.com in installation step.
I don't clearly understand what you said.... lets start from beginning.. First you create folder name abc at www.xyz.com so the url is www.xyz.com/abc (right?) Second you install WP in abc folder Third you set your WordPress address (URL): and Blog address (URL): to www.xyz.com ? or www.xyz.com/abc ? www.abc.xyz.com ? As I understand from WP is if you set both address to www.xyz.com even if you go to www.xyz.com/abc it will redirect to www.xyz.com ( according to wp setting ) If the above is not a problem .. try this -> go to your WP using www.abc.xyz.com/index.php Again I'm not sure as I still don't get your problem ( wish i can be more helpful) Regards, myo
A lot of hosts won't work with the www infront of the subdomain it may need to be just http://abc.xyz.com
Hi Guys thankfor the replies.. I will explain in details I have a blog @ wwwcrankup.net (wp is installed in the roor) Now I want to install another blog insid anoer folder. The folder name is codegeeks. I created the ffolder and installed WP (with diff table prefix) ... Now when I type in http://www.crankup.net/codegeeks .. My new blog opens which is correct. My hosting says that to create a subdomain al I have to do it create a folder . So for creating a subdomain named www.test.crankup.net . all I have to do is create a folder named test. And it works.. Similarly www.codegeeks.crankup.net shuld work! But when I typ i codegeeks.crankup.net or www.codegeeks.crankup.net it automatically redirects to www.crankup.net I did some searchign yesterday and doubt that it is .htaccess file which is causing the issue. But still not resolved. Shoban
which hosting are you using? Anyway try this in your .htaccess Options -Indexes +FollowSymLinksRewriteEngine OnRewriteBase / RewriteCond %{HTTP_HOST} ^crankup.net [NC] RewriteRule ^(.*)$ http://www.crankup.net$1 [L,R=301] RedirectMatch 301 ^/codegeeks/(.*)$ http://codegeeks.crankup.net/$1 Code (markup):
Thanks.. but the same thig happens crankup.net : fine www.codegeeks.crankup.net : redirects to www.crankup.net
do you have access to your zone file? most hosts let you edit thru their own scripts; some give you direct access, as well. If there is a problem with the script (ex. "add subdomain" only allows x number of characters for a name [but doesn't let you know this]), then it may not be committing the necessary changes to your zone file.
