There's no absolutes in keyword density - write for your visitors and not the search engines and you're more likely to end up with something that has a natural feel. Huddle over a calculator and you'll get the opposite.

It's a difficult one. I don't think keyword density is as important as it once was and you don't want to annoy your visitors with content that is stuffed full of kywords, however you do need some on the page. I aim for around 10 and find that Google hasn't penalised me for it yet.

First, read the Keyword Density of Non-sense aritcle by Dr. E. Garcia; you'll soon realize that keyword density is uselss. In theory, you could not generate relevant results based on the density of keywords on a web page without relevancy and cheating issues.

Your better off writing content for visitors and STRICTLY for visitors. Stop trying to inject keywords where they don't need to be. Some of the highest ranking content in search results is simply made for visitors and not search engines.

ssandecki, hit the nail :) KD may be important but its pretty obvious that increasing your keyword density is not going to make things work, otherwise everyone would had done that. Try to get quality backlinks, it will help more.

if you take the keyword density is not to help you rank higher. its more of keyword spam prevention metric.

    just a piece of advice..
I don't think that the numbers or percentage of your KW density has something to do with your rankings. A lot of things to consider here.. Have you checked the number of links of your 'rival' site? the actual placement of the KWs on their pages? and a lot more things to check out for. Maybe you need to do a wiser SEO strategies than over-doing your page with your kws

Beyond going with the general benchmark of 3-4% KD I would focus on offsite optimization.

Look buddy Google relies on 2 things

Hight quality relevant Keywords + Llink building
    So don't concentrate on KD,,,,,,,,

Make relevant content and attract USERS rather than SE becz once users come u get automatically ranked into SE's. And don't forget the backlinks which is the heart of GOOGLE.

i agree with everyone, keyword density is not a major issue. what important are links with your keywords from websites that have similar interest.. as some one pointed out, you should construct a website for your readers rather than search engines.

recently Google lead web spam engineer Matt cutt was interviewed by usa today and he did talk about
how to do SEO properly, may be I should post it here and share it with some one who is interested with the topic,
here is the link off my digg profile:
