America is no longer the fattest country in the world

Australia is the fattest nation in the world, with more than 9 million adults classified as obese or overweight, a new study indicates.

The study reported Australians outweigh U.S. residents and 123,000 Aussies could experience premature deaths during the next 20 years, The Age reported.

Four million Australians -- 26 percent of the adult population -- are considered obese, compared to 25 percent of Americans, the report by Melbourne's Baker IDI Heart and Diabetes Institute said. An additional 5 million Australians are considered overweight.

If the crisis isn't averted, obesity experts said health costs could exceed $6 billion and hospitals would have to admit an additional 700,000 people heart attacks, strokes and blood clots caused by excess pounds.

Adults most at risk of premature death are in the 45-to-64 age group, with 70 percent of men and 60 percent of women classified as obese, the report said.

The data were based on more than 14,000 people at rural and metropolitan sites in all Australian states and territories, The Age said. Participants had their body mass index recorded by having their weight, height and waist measured as part of a national blood pressure screening day in 2007.

Congratulations on being #1 for now, Australia. Enjoy it while it lasts, we are working diligently to regain our title. I'm gonna go see what's in the fridge.

BMI is a horrible method to determine who is fat and who is not.

It's not accurate if you're a body builder, but most people aren't body builders, so it's a good way of determining who's overweight or obese for the general population.

It's not accurate if you have any decent amount of muscle or bone density.

    Not just 'body builders'

I am morbidly obese according to BMI, according to it I should be like 180's, there simply is no way I'd ever be in the 180's with my bone build, body building or not.

Are you a doctor? Have you got to medical university? If not, then your opinion is invalid :)

He may not be a doctor but he is right. Just because someone has more bone density or muscle that doesn't make them obese. A more accurate way to determine obesity would be to measure body fat %.

I guess it is the pot calling the kettle black. Americans had 25% versus 26%. They may catch up anytime :)

The study is so contrary to the fact, why I say that is, Australia produces some of the finest sportsperson, they have a strong "domestic sport structure" !!

It's hard to believe the study !

Well I didn't do a survey, but if you walk on the streets just take a look, I kinda believe what the survey say.

You could not eat for six months and only consume water and vitamins. If it didn't kill you, your weight might be 185.

Grim is correct. Most skinny basketball players including Jordan are considered morbidly obese.

A person should concentrate on a heart healthy diet and fitness plan that includes resistance training.
