Some of the pages of one of my 3 year old site are still not indexed. How do I make google index them? They are original content and linked from the main page.

You can submit a sitemap that contains links in your site through Google Webmaster Console account. That will help :)

Besides a sitemap it might also be worth checking Google just to make sure somebody hasn't "borrowed" your content and got it indexed.

i was thinking of tearing down this General health site into smaller more specific sites....do you think this would be better or worse?

    For the purpose of?

Running many more smaller sites also mean taking up more of your time in order to maintain the fresh content to attract regular bots visit.. If your main site does not receives good SERP, tearing down the site to smaller sites will not going to help.

Your site will only get better rankings if Search Engine finds that your page is relevant to what the searchers are looking for. They basically look for two things:

    1) Backlinks to your page.

    2) Keyword relevancy of your page to the search terms.

Now, the above two points are totally unrelated to whether you have a site or ten smaller sites. It is the page content that matters :)

    -Check copyscape for content theft
-Make sure each page has unique title/desc
-Check that you don't have several URLs poiting to the same content
-Get some external links for these pages

ok......i ran a copyscape search and found LOADS of sites that have copied my content. One of them is actually a gov site! I cant manage to get all the sites to take down my content so I am thinking of rewriting.....what do you think?

No, do not rewrite if you find people copying your content. Instead, report this to Google if you find that their pages are ranking above you. I think you can find something over at Google Webmaster blog.. check it out :)

making site maps, i recomend make it in xml. link those page to other page that have some high pr of your own website. and if still no joy, then submit those page to other websites or to google, difficult but last way.
