Off=page is most effective in my opinion, but this is an affirmation I do based on experience...

Well, if content is king - then onpage, of course.

neither are more effective than the other, they are equally important.

Though technically speaking off page matters more in terms of %.
However you should not choose one over the other, that's ridiculous, they are to be worked on equally.

In on page, work on keywords h1, h2 tags... bold the keywords and main thing is the content............

Off page. do article/directory/blog submission .. Do SMO. forum posting .. all do with you Keywords

in reality you need to do both. Onpage is important because it helps your webpages become more visible and readable in search engines and they get indexed better, but off page is important because you need a good link building strategy to help boost your ranking in serps

I believe they are both important. Both are essential because they play a vital role to get higher in terms of page rank and popularity.

Off page is 10 times as important as on-page. This "content is king" would be lovely in an ideal world. Write some nice content, rank top for it. But it doesnt work that way. Google can't tell what content is good and what isn't - it can only weed out particularly bad content - stuff ripped off from elsewhere.

You can get absolute garbage websites ranking very highly for competitive terms, with really low quality spammed link buying. Sure it might not stay there though. You can get really garbage sites ranking well and keep them ranking well by using proper link buying.

Anyone saying onpage and offpage are equal are deluded in my opinion. There is no way to rank for something competitive with onpage alone. Give me a garbage website and enough money and I'll rank it for any term purely with link buying, and 20mins of onpage work.

What's most important; having a good product or good marketing? The marketing of course. You can have the very best content on the internet with perfect on-page SEO that has no external links and it won't be found in a search engine. Unfortunately, today's search engines rely on external link text that matches your on-page optimization.

Bottom line, get your on-page SEO right then go build links.

nice quote :) I have to disagree though having seen some low content sites rank for hard terms just thru links.

look at page www. webpan.com/auvillar/ (remove the space)

It comes no 4 for the town of the name, and I think most people would agree it's a 'low content' page.

OK so it's not a very competitive term, but it still outranks the town tourist office, because it has old links from when it was presumably a 'real' page.

Tells me that links are more important than content.

On-page is basic SEO principles, don't spend too much time on it - it's Off-page which gives more weight in terms of authority.

Anyone can optimize a page with whatever content, but if you are trying to rank for a highly competitive keyword it won't matter; if you cannot build some highly quality authority links.

Someone mentioned, just do blogs, directories, etc - low quality backlinks, but if you're keywords aren't in a competitive niche it may just help.

Vary your anchor text for your backlinks to suit the page content, pages with relevancy to the keyword, but IMO you're better off with quality over quantity backlinks, it will save you time in the long run and will make it harder for your competitors to compete...unless they're doing the same thing ;)
