Check out the plugin Allinone SEO plugin. Also change your dynamic links into links that use your post title instead of the date, time etc. ex:

yoursite.com/post?=1 = BAD (which is default for WP)
    yoursite.com/how-to-eat-bugs-07-01-2008 = GOOD

utilize good content, your H1 and H2 tags, and also use the seo plugin to modify your title tags and meta information.

Use All in one SEO plugin for Wordpress.
Use Robots.txt to block duplicate content.
Use XML sitemap plugin to generate Sitemap and submit it to google.
Keep the sidebar on the Right.

It is the main problem with blogs. Website owners can just call a new page what they want, but blog owners are reliant on the software provider having a good knowledge of SEO. I'm not so sure how or if you can change this in wordpress, although I'm sure they'll be a plug in for it at some point.

The location of the sidebar on the viewport has nothing to do with SEO. What matters is its location in the SOURCE CODE.

    To change what?

I think Wordpress is pretty well optimised from the outset - you just need to watch for dupe content, avoid shoving all content under a general or single category and use robots.txt for banning dupe content.

Most blog sites are already optimized.

    Here is my suggestion:

Bold your keywords and use one <h1> tag with your keyword in it.

Rule of thumb. List your bold keyword once per paragraph. Paragraph being 5 sentences long.

    Dont over-spam

No, they're not actually. A lot of them have duplicate content and canonical URI issues - WordPress in particular. Others, such as Blogger, repeat the META description tag on every page, rather than letting each page's description (summary) be tailored.

A better idea - write for your users instead of the search engines. Brian Clark has a wonderful article on why writing for spiders is the least sticky strategy of all.

See the article I linked to above. Write for your users, not the search engines. After all high rankings mean jack squat if theyr'e accompanied with high bounce rates and low conversions.

    Better yet, just don't spam.

Valid markup won't affect the search engines most of the time, but it does have benefits elsewhere (especially on the designer's and users' end) so I'll second your recommendation there.

Thanks for the suggestions. I am fixing up a couple new wordpress blogs right now. I just downloaded 25 plugins including the ones mentioned in your checklist. Which ones are the most important in your opinion?
