Hey do you think Microsoft will slowly fade away just like any other old companies now that Bill Gates leave the daily running to his CEO? I mean Microsoft is all about Bill Gates. Also don't forget the new unwavering competiton from Google.

Microsoft isn't going to fade away any time soon... if Balmer can't handle the heat then I'll initiate a hostile takeover.. ^_^ they're doing good though... I like their strategy right now.. and xbox is still #1... windows has a lot of vulnerabilities... yet, its still clean enough.. they're production efficient and their structure has yet to pull them apart.. Maybe its Gates consulting that's keeping them in the black/green.. kudos though.. 0_o

Something to think about. Microsoft is not just Microsoft. They have made Billions and Billions. And they invest that money in other companies. They are well managed and diversified. The own a significant portion of the desktop OS and Business Software market.

Gates was not running the show anyway.

The largest software company in the world has much more than just Windows OS which is predominant in nearly all desktop. Its MSN is popular despite competition from Google and its Microsoft Office one of the most popular office suite. Whoever takes over the helm of Bill Gates may not have the charisma of the founder but definitely Microsoft will continue. This is not a one man show you are talking about but one of the largest companies in the world.

Yes but different kind of work, his charitable foundation of which even Warren Buffett pledged all his wealth.

In my opinion Microsoft=Windows. When another OS becomes viable, Microsoft will no longer be as important as it is. That is not to say that it will fade away, far from it, but in my opinion Microsoft's big hit was and will always be their operating systems. Their other ventures are mainly borrowed ideas.

And don't forget all the developer tools, which are damn best. And server solutions also, mostly for enterprises.
Don't forget that Windows sits on 90% of computers because it's easy to use and it's easy to develop for it.

Microsoft will never fade away. They dominate the OS market and can use that dominance to muscle into any market they so choose. I expect them to dump loads of money into their search product. Whether the end results of that will offer competition to Yahoo or Google is anyones guess...

Microsoft is actually a really good company that makes pretty damn good products. They are so big and successful that infact you only hear negative info about them due to all the haters.

Example is Vista. I think its damn wonderful :p and so do millions of other people.

It is generations of programmers work accumulated into Windows. For someone to produce from scratch is not possible. Hopefully there are a lot of disruptive technologies in the form of open source OS such as Linux which is morphing into good desktop OS, this will keep Windows on its toes.

Microsoft will have its day of reckoning, look at Ford.
    Will it be someday soon?
I doubt it will be in my lifetime.
