Taxonomies are easily represented as trees but that doesn't mean that the values represented in the tree are not actually part of a continuum. I'm not an expert on the theory of evolution but my understanding is that one of the fundamental principles that drives it is that many small changes over a lot of time results eventually in big enough changes so that differences can be represented in tree form. Without the tree representation it makes it very difficult to classify different forms of life. However the hierarchal tree representation is probably a distorted view of the original data but that doesn't really matter as it's still a very valuable tool for classification which facilitates other intellectual pursuits. You could probably break up and represent people in a taxonomy form by separating by different characteristics endemic to or prominent in each "race". However I agree that it is also, technically a distorted view of the original data since the differences in races are actually a continuum or gradient rather than large, distinct groups. But that doesn't make a representation of the data which chops up different areas of the continuum and presents them as distinct groups any less useful.
