Yes directories are one of the best source of traffic toward your website but relevant directories give more benefit to you. it also increase the page rank of your site and better ranking in Alexa .

I don´t normally comment here opn the whole directory debate but I´ve seen a few.. ermm... negative vibes / myths in this thread.

Traffic: I get between 600 and 800 uniques from the SE´s to my general directory. Where these guys go means that soemone must be getting traffic. Even after the bounce rate that some directories suffer. Why this traffic for a PR0 site (yes the google slap)... Categorization.

Categorization: Google has long maintained that a relevant link is worth far more than a general link. Ie "Travel" linking to a "hotel in asia" isn´t worth as much keyword relavency as "Hotel in asia" <> "Hotel in Asia" even if the PR on the first page is higher (ok, PR9 PR 0 comparison is something else but PR3 PR0 isn´t much). The directory is built with a very large number of categories that are being added to regularly. Easiest way to rank for niche searches and long tail searches.

Time for that traffic and categorization to be of benefit to the person who´s site is listed....

SEO for directory submissions: For every guy I´ve met that knows something about SEO I´ve met 10 that haven´t but thought they did!!! If I tell you that around 75% of all submissions are binned directly due to submission services that don´t practise SEO then you´ll see some of the battle. Where is the best position in a directory? The homepage, yes. 2nd best? A tier 2 page, debatable. A page using the same or similar keywords to the site you are promoting... Yes! Your title reads as part of the page, keyword relevancy is tops and its more likely to be approved.

Thats enough for now but I hope its given a little info ...

Finally, If you want a directory to do well it has to PROVIDE VALUE to the VISITOR.... its the same as any other website, make it useful and people will use it!

Only if you stay on the Home Page long enough. That is if a particular directory offers it.

In a word, yes. The directory that sends me the most is 2yi.net (59 unique visitors last month).

100% yes, free directories except a few exceptions to the rule will only give you webmaster traffic, paid directories of quality can give you real traffic that should in turn convert into sales for those listed in there. Well that's the theory anyway. :)

Directory submission helps improve my site ranking in S.E. Directories helps me to build IBLs.

Theory yes reality = once people are sent to your site , it your ball, and in that the receiving site must be optimised, presented and be able to capture the market / customer.

No good getting people to your site if it less than running on 100%, i see to many people complain when the answer is looking at them in their own web site.

Yes people can send you visitors, only you can convert them once they are there.

Nice points and with some hard graft one we're taking on board at a rate of knots. You'll never get a directory 100% running, it just won't happen, but getting as near as you can is and we should all aim for that.

Rep given to one of the better posts on here.
