I was submitting my article to a website when they redirected me to this site:

    http://viralurl.com/mp1/Article-Marketers-Dream/

In the first paragraph it says...

Is this true? Do you agree?

It's actually a site to promote article spinning for free. The site that I'm submitting the article to is trying to sell this service to me by introducing the free version first (they have a paid version of this service).

What I'm trying to find out is whether their statement about duplicate content and backlinks from these articles is true.

Hey you must try copyscape to find out the duplicate content over the web. Then you can find the pages, which are using your article stuff and the reason behind the rejection of article in that particular article spin site.

i don't know if it's true but i've heard of some people here submitting articles for distribution. then on their own site they'll rewrite the article slightly so it doesn't look like a duplicate of what's being spread around on the Net.

I too heard about changing your article so that it is not exactly the same as your website. There are some people who will also steal the info on your site and publish them as their own article which could have caused this problem.
