    Hey,

Well I need to conduct some market research for my web hosting. Any one who suggests some information which is used used or implemented will be given free lifetime hosting with www.alloyhosting.com.

So my question is, when you look for a web host, what do you look for?

If your with a web host currently, what would make you switch to another host? When switching, what do you expect?

    Hello Sohan,

When I look for a host, I look at the price and what they can give for that price. I also look at the competitors to find the better deal. I think that most people do look at the stats of the servers that the host is using as well. Looking at how long the host has been in the business and how many satisfied customers they had would also be something that I look for in a host.

What would make me switch to another host is if the host was clueless about what they were doing and was not there when I needed him/her. We all have to learn this stuff at some point if we are serious about being webmasters. So if the host isn't there to help, or has no idea what he or she is doing, then I would defiantly have to switch to another host even if he/she does have maybe more space/bandwidth and costs cheaper. At least until I get the hang of things. That is my point of view, not sure if anyone else shares that with me.

    Good Luck.

Though price and what I'm getting for price is very important, I also look at other things. For example, do they have good uptime? How is their customer service? How fast are their servers?

Well we certainly won't be trying to compete on price fully. With more price comes better service, and with a lower price comes less service or quality.

We aim to keep our staff happy as well as our clients. We strive to provide the best support possible, and aim to keep it personalized. However, with our prices we do offer a lot compared to our competitors.

I don't think comparing the speeds of servers is an easy thing to do.

When looking for a new host, I first look for user reviews on independent websites and blogs. Then, I look for what they have to offer and how good of a deal it is. I never look at the cheapest price, but I do look to see if what they promise is realistic. For instance, unlimited space and bandwidth for $8 on a shared hosting plan is a big red flag for me. I also make sure the hosting company's website is professional looking, with no old school flames and anything "noobish" like that. I also check for spelling errors, because if the company can't communicate with me, I can't communicate with them. Also, if their site loads slow, I won't even bother, since that probably means mine will as well. Furthermore, I look for other promotions, such as an affiliate program or even a free domain name for signing up for a certain plan.

For me to switch from a webhost, I would have to have a bad experience whether it is in bad customer service, too much downtime, or not having something that was advertised such as PHP5 support. For me to switch to a specific web hosting company, they would just have to have a good reputation, and a fairly good deal. A great rep is essential for a company in such a polluted industry.

    Hope I helped.

Plans with unmetered bandwidth are real nower days. Bandwidth can be obtained by hosts easily in mass if needed. I mean I could have our servers upgraded to a 1Gb/s full duplex port within 20minutes if needed (100mb is standard on all). This would help a webmaster keep his Digg home page traffic for example, without paying overages or crashing the server.

But for $8 per month? That definitely sounds like overselling. Your host only offers unlimited to $20 per month customers, and that's much more believable.

Well we certainly don't offer unlimited. The key word that should sound alarm bells is unlimited, not unmetered. Unmetered means it's not limited and not checked upon.

However, if we get some one who signs up and abuses these limits we do suspend without hesitation and send a refund to them. That way our users on the servers are not affect and they are not out of pocket either.

We really do like to have a plan for every user. For example our $5 plan is for the newer users to the internet who won't need loads of SQL Databases and loads of addon domains etc. Therefore, they aren't paying for stuff they won't use. With our plans you can upgrade instantly using our management panel. So your always paying for what you use, nothing more.

Aye, I meant unmetered, just got my words messed up. For me, as long as a hosting company is up front and honest, and not too expensive, they work for me.

    I look for...

A free domain name. I never have enough to buy hosting and the domain.
    Affordability
The host admin has an IM that their clients can reach them through and ask questions when need be.
The host helps the clients out with their problems
Good deals. With minimal downtime and fast speeds
    value for my money.

Thats just some of the things I look for at the first glance

Well we really do not EVER add a client on an IM client.

We normally help through our chat or tickets only.

It is a pretty bad idea to help through IM.

i think you need to be able to understand the terms and conditions and sites with plain english terms and conditions always get my vote, it is dam obvious pricing is an issue and im sure your aware of that, but some websites seem to go out of their way to make it impossible for you to use, by this i mean they are not user friendly. try and keep navigation simple and hot link what you think people are going to want to click on most frequently.

i don't expect to see a representative on a forum... because, as a company you shouldn't have time for that, you should 'keep working', maintain the servers, monitor and so on, when i see a owner of an hosting company on a forum it means his company is not having the right importance
