Jamie: I would differ from you 'slightly'. I agree that mods are 'not' the most important thing for a script but they can't be ignored. I wouldn't agree with you if you say there is a script that has 'all' mods. People would like to modify their directory according to their choice.. It is always good for any 'script' (not only directory script) to have a lot of pre-developed mods, plug-ins and extensions.

To be honest when I look for a script I don't bother looking at free versions because I usually want all the features and then some.

The thing you need to do is go to each site and evaluate the features for each script and compare them with want you need the script to accomplish. In the cases of most scripts you will need to take into account any mods or templates that are also available and factor in how much customization you want to do.

It is also not a bad idea to check the support forums and their ability to help you should the need arise.

When all is said and done you need to decide as many here, including myself have biases towards certain scripts for various reasons. They may be just what that person has used, the support they have received or they have affiliations with a certain script.

That's the reason we opened the source-code for the script in my sig. There are a wide range of mods that could be added by a.n.other, so I'm not dismissing it out of hand but anyone who can tell me that a free script with no features but mods that can be put in at a fee most likely is better or equal to one that already has them is not being truthful to themselves.

As much as I'd like to agree with you on the mods that point pretty much falls flat if you can turn the mods on or off at your leasure, the fact they are there in the first place doesn't mean you have to use them.

A bit like having a big engine under the hood, you don't have to use it to the max all the time but its good knowing you can. :)

@An0n, read my post here, it answers why I'm probably not wrong.

One of the most important things is the availability of mods to add some originality to a project, if a script has what is claimed to be everything that you need, not only is it a huge exageration but it means that feature wise it will result in clones.

A good example of available features through mods would be Wordpress, plugins of course, with over 2000 available, i can say that had wordpress not have the ability to use plugins with it that id most likely have no interest in it at all.

I was looking at a script recently for a certain type of site and it wasn't free and wasn't cheap either but its features were quite limited.

So if your shopping for a directory script or a script for any other type of site and you cant mod it through available mods, or coding something yourself then you hit a brick wall regarding features.

I wondered how long it would take for someone to hi-jack a thread on a FREE script trying push people to but a full version. It always smells of desperation, I often wonder if you and pipes are paid to push it you do it so often.

I did, and I stand firm on my opinion.

No script will ever be the all-in-one stop. Believe me.

I can MOD anything and everything no matter the script.

I am currently over my head in tasks, but hopefully will have time in the near future to check it out.

you can try, but you are failing at understanding what brings community.

look at what i brought to the phpld forums. think that was duval who made that community? hahaha guess again. we know who made that one. ;)

I wonder how long it will take for all the phpld haters to die!
seriously,, why do you all bash phpld so much,,, if you don't like it, don't use it.. Very simple solution..

you guys that red rep anyone that even mentions using phpld really need to get lives! ;)

phpld doesn't have an affiliate program as far as I know, I gain nothing from supporting phpld.. what do you gain from having your head up your ass??

    Hows the view...

I've said it before, and I'll say it again.. funny enough, I think it was a phpld thread last time but anyways....
red rep me all you want,, I could really care less ;)

First, I ALWAYS sign my rep, just like you, I haven't sent you any. Nobody hates phpld, so get that one straight. Haven't you ever thought it might be the way the script was run and the way it is shoved down peoples throats as the best when it clearly isn't is what isn't liked?

I won't respond to my head up my ass as it lowers the standard of the thread which is pretty much what you do just about every post.

I think its because they are direct competition.

The only difference I see between JamieG and Duval, is JamieG openly does phpLD bashing, while Duval runs to everyone else and has them do it for him.

Either way, noone is right, and it will continue to go on(my guess and .o2)
