Main thing is Quality Unique Content without which whatever u do the rank will lag behind
Next thing is Link Building
Linkback to high content sites like wikipedia
Insite optimisation with proper linking between inside pages
Creation of sitemap's and submitting it to major search engines
Pinging whenever you put a new article or new content
Submitting to free directories as paid links if caught are penalised
Submitting to social bookmarking sites like digg, del.icio.us, stumbleupon etc

well important point? according to me here is tow must important point 1 is on page optimization and other is of page optimization

sitemaps are very useful because they allow you to submit your content to google and it will help you get your pages indexed. You can also resubmit when you update your site.
