Do people acctually get traffic FROM directories?

I was wondering if anybody actually gets traffic (more that 5 click throughs a month) from directories? It seems like a good/easy place to get a link, possibly with some PR. However I have a hard time seeing anybody getting enough traffic to justify it.

I've had good traffic from 3 directories, one was a high pr bidding directory before Google stepped in. The others were both free, freeindex.co.uk and another one.

Not really, my traffic usually comes from the search engines, but i still cant find anywhere where traffic was ever stated as being a main factor of directories?

Backlinks first no? potentially a pr increaser? and if your lucky some traffic no?

    Have i got it wrong?

You only get one hit if you're lucky, and that's the admin before he approves/disapproves your site, after that it's all over :)

Speak for yourself, I just love negativity in an area that is supposed to be to promote directories not put them down as complete waste of time.

FWIW, I ocassionally look at the traffic I get from the Yahoo directory and compare it to the traffic that gets referred... it's pretty modest in terms of "return on investment"... But I get a few people. Maybe enough customers to pay for the annual fee. Maybe.

I still do it, though... I can't stop myself.

Direct traffic from a directory will depend on the directory and how it is set up. There are directories which send me traffic.

Usually no, but that is not the main reason for submitting to directories anyway.
The main reason is backlinks. There are many ways to find backlinks but directories are the easiest one (and many would say the least valuable).

One guy is totally lucky. He submitted his website to my directory and detail page ranks #3 for specific keyword. Interesting is that his website does not rank for the same keyword even if he used it as title to submit to my directory. Anyway he gets some 1000 visitors a month from my directory alone ;)

So yeah if you're lucky you can get nice amount of visitors from directories !

The purpose of directories is for anchor text not for traffic. Most directories are optimized for SEO people...

I submitted one of my GPT sites to a couple of directories and get a good amount of traffic from them. I wouldn't rely on directories for traffic though.

I get good traffic from some niche directories. The general directories for the most part don't send too many.

However, here's a way to find directories that will send you traffic. Start with a list of high traffic directories (or a list of directories in your niche regardless of their traffic). Then do a google search for some keywords in their title, description, and h1 tags. If the directory shows up in the top 20 results you've got a chance of actually getting some traffic. I've found several in my niche this way that send some hits every month...some of them are free too.

Sorry if I offended you mate, it wasn't my intention I was just saying what I've experienced through directories, I'm not saying they're bad or anything they're just not useful for direct traffic as I don't know anyone who spends countless hours going through thousands of links in a directory and visiting the sites he links.

Saying all this I'm not one of those anti-directory people out there, I do use and will keep on using directories for SEO purposes nothing else. They're a good place to get a free backlink with the anchor of your choice.

If you've received any REASONABLE traffic from any directories please let me know how you did it :)

    Cheers

You never offended me Danny, I just get fed up of seeing people coming onto what is supposed to be a positive platform to discuss the benefits of directories not speak of doom and gloom. Never tar all directories with the same brush either, there are some out there that do offer some good traffic and not just to other directory owners. How did I get reasonable traffic? Hard work.

    All is well. :)

What do you mean hard word, do you play the numbers game where you post to thousands and thousands of directories? or do you research the ones that should give you the most results and that's it?

Note: The problem with most directory lists now a days is that a ton of amature webmasters just buy a directory license add their directory to a couple of directory lists and that's it. (That's why we get thousands of directories). It's really a downfall when you go through the effort of going through these directories submitting sites when you know that in a couple of months time most of them won't be standing anymore and their domain will end up being parked like the rest of them.

Directories do sends traffic but its very little compared to SE's, It depends on how the directory is optimized. But yes directory submission helps you for better SEO.

Not sure if this makes it tougher or better for those going about it the right way, but can agree that there is ever growing mountains of crap appearing.

I am at a conclusion that for any person wishing to develop a directory type site on professional level, that this is not the place to promote it or seek submissions from.
