I wont even talk about his fortune....you retire when your tired of working and itatime to move on.

He doesn't need to work at Microsoft.

He needs to run his foundation, one of the biggest (if not the biggest) private foundation in the US.

    He didn't lose anything.

PS I may be wrong about the charity comment, correct me if need be.

he isn't running away... he's been planning his retirement for over 5 years... Therels always competition. If Gates waited until there wasn't competition left he wouldn't ever retire.. And besides, its not like he dropped all of his MSFT shares.

Microsoft is still far larger than Google in terms of market capitalization. And Gates is richer than the Google guys combined :)

Bill started microsoft back in what, 1975? Think about what he's done. He put a computer in every home, on every desk. He created the worlds largest development platform. Microsoft has done so much for people, Google can't even compare.

If it wasn't for microsoft, Google wouldn't have been thought of/wouldn't have anyone to use their service.

As far as search engines, yeah google is doing better. But microsoft is catching up, and I think they'll grab and hold onto a big chunk of the marketshare.

Although i do accept that Google has really been a big blow to microsoft and Bill gates, i respect Bill for the decision he made to quit Microsoft and work for charity. Very few of us would leave a life of wealth and a great job at Microsoft for the sake of the poor. I think we all should respect Bill gates for his sacrifice. Regardless if we like Microsoft or not. I personally like google over Microsoft (in terms of a corporation as a whole) but respect Bill for his care for the poor.

Before you make comments like that you should research why the man quit!

    Thanks

the only research i get is:

    1. Microsoft tries to dominate the internet.
    2. ASP sucks and SQL server is expensive
    3. Micoroft has no adsense.
    4. Internet Explorer clash with FireFox

Why retire at the peak of the internet warfare with Google?

I think he cares a great deal about Microsoft losing to Google in the search battle. Money stopped being his motivation in life well over 20 years ago. He had more than enough money to retire in the mid-1980's. It's been a game for him since then, and I'm sure he's not pleased with Google slaughtering Microsoft in search.

Bill Gates didn't lose anything. I don't think there is anyone of us that would not want to be in his position. I know I, for one, would love to be.
