Check this out, ICANN will open doors for domain names like ***.*** in early 2009. ICANN has just made a decision that goes beyond allowing .xxx to be a top level domain; they're allowing all words to be top level domains. That means you're going to see domains like fuck.shit, shit.shit, shit.fuck, whatisthisshit.fuck, and so forth. What's not allowed is domains that conflict with trademarks (.pepsi was the example), too similar to current top level domains, or names associated with countries or governments (juicy.turkey). Companies will also register their products and services, leading to really annoying domains like pleaseplayyour.ps3pleaseplease, or dontyouwantanother.ipod. Nice one, ICANN. Nice one.
this is for real, don't believe, don't cry, go to www.icann.com and read. They are only 2 million in profit last year, so they are doing this to get more money. jredrum, www.google.com is a great website you can search for stuff there, and forums.digitalpoint.com is not for saying bullshit. also, USAtoday
probably not a bad idea considering how much the domain market is overpriced and without good available domains due to parking and speculation. i'd feel bad for anyone who's invested a substantial sum in domains
The story is true and ICANN did vote to proceed with the proposals. However because of the way ICANN is structured (as a non profit, yeah right!) the costs of them pushing this proposal through over quite a number of years have spiralled and these costs will now be put on the customers. Therefore, it will be extremely expensive to actually register one of these formats of domains so it will still be a long time before we start to see the dumb type of domains as shown in the first post. To begin with it will be a huge rush by all of the rich people to secure trademarks, etc.
I doubt it. I've been reading about this and it seems like a total BS game that doesn't really have a great future. Wanted to blog about it, but decided i'd wait to see how things unfold.
Fka200, worth posting i guess. And domains won't drop so much in price, it just will be harder to sell them. Anyways it will take more than 2-3 years for some internet user Johny to be completely familiar with those kind of domains to decide registering one. Here is the controversy, ICANN is not a commercial company, but lets face it, they have to pay it's employees So They have to make tose kind of domain to be very cheap resulting in tons of spammy domains, or make them extremely expensive, to reduce their quantity and leave spammers on .info's BTW, a little hint for .info lovers, it's been a year since godaddy offers 2 dollar registrations of .info domains, but as some of you know, second year is ten bucks (without promo code) just like .com, so you can start harvesting dropped .info's
Now just think if some business wanted some brand name in Europe wouldn't they register .eu? But yet .com is favorite. So this will be same scenario. Businesses won't brand their names with their own TLD's they will still go after the .com
It's going to happen, but not anytime soon. To apply for your own .tld you need approval from ICANN, and on top of that, a 100k application fee. This is not gonna take over anything, don't worry, most companies are not gonna be willing to spend 100k on that.
$100,000 is peanuts for large companies who make hundreds of millions and billions in profit per year. It's like only a few dollars to them.
LOL then the company would be rather happy to spend 1/10 price of it to get the .com version of their name.
