Yet again the situation in Zimbabwe makes headline news here in Britain. Does Zimbabwe receive the same kind of coverage in other countries, or is it a particular fascination that we have because it is a former colony?
In french media there is a very small critic about his political repression, because it is close to fake election time, but the thing he's done with the white farmers in the past hasn't had the coverage it deserved. French media and anti racists associations like to spread the idea that racism is when a white person does or says something bad about a black, arab or a jew. Also racism/anti semitism can be when arabs do something against jews in France. That's about it for racism. But the dictator of zimbabwe played on racism to stay in power, and it's always dangerous to play with that.
Fareed Zakaria of CNN had some good ways to combat this problem. He said that the international community should do the following: - Freeze international bank accounts of Mugabe, his ministers and his top army personnel. - Not allow any of these people into their countries. - Cancel visas of these peoples children studying in other countries. That way, you will be punishing them and not the people of Zimbabwe. Once these people are conered and penniless, they will be forced to play fair rather than to bully the poor and weak. This way, no country has to go to war with them either.
After Zimbabwe vote, human toll yet to be counted Zimbabwe's election may be over— President Robert Mugabe claimed victory Sunday and was immediately sworn in for another five-year term— but the human toll of one of the most brutal political campaigns in recent memory is still being calculated. Opposition leaders and pro-democracy activists think that government militias killed scores of people and abducted perhaps hundreds of others as Mugabe decimated a popular opposition party and extended his 28-year rule over this crumbling southern African nation.
..and if you say something general about african countries and how they're ruled and you'll be quickly labelled as racist, so I prefer to say nothing but let me think nonetheless!
lol this is the same thinking my dad has. I try to argue with him. I try to come up with countries that this kind of stuff doesn't happen (or worse yet, no economy at all) in but I fall short.
Let's say that there obviously is something wrong with the development of Africa in general, no? They're meant to be the origin of humanity, so they had some early start in development and now they're still under developped! Of course some centuries ago europeans went and invaded them, yes that probably ruined a lot, but they should have invaded us if they had developped better with their early start. Were they advanced when europeans made colonies of them? So hoping for Africa's development by themselves is a bit of an utopia I think
it their country and their way of life and their problem. i am white myself. Did those whites purchased the land or occupied with force?!
When we see him on tv Mugabe always goes on about the former colony aspect but i do not think it has got much to do with that at all the real issue is the president of that country is living a life of luxury while his people are struggling in poverty as a direct result of his actions and thats without going into torture, beatings and worse.
I think that the problem with African countries is diversity. Africa has a number of coutries and within each country, there are a number of tribes of people. These tribes are so deep rooted in their beliefs that they cannot live with each other. Colonization somewhat united them, but once the Belgiums, French and British started to pull out, the tribes started squabbling for power. Now, it is a free for all. Everybody wants to make a buck. The continent is rich in natural resources so there is money to be had. But it is the power hungry who are taking most of it. The power hungry people are a handful of leaders who have fire power behind them. That's it. They pay their henchmen a small amount of money and have their dirty deeds done for them.
