Which is Better SEO or just promoting your site?

I am very new to this internet marketing and seo business and would like to know if seo is that important. I know it is important, but I hear so much about it that it seems to overshadow general marketing. Any suggestions?

Of course they're both important. On-page SEO factors include things like proper keyword useage, search-engine friendly URLs, proper page Title tags, semantic coding, etc. (see: http://www.seomoz.org/article/search-ranking-factors)

But that alone isn't going to market or promote your site. In addition to on-page SEO, you'll need to promote your site by generating backlinks and traffic. To really grow a site you need to be marketing it all the time, either through social networking and bookmarking, original content dissemination, newsworthy press release submissions, etc. There's no end to the amount of ways to market and promote a site, the more you can do, the better. In the end it comes down to building lots of relevant, strong backlinks from established sites.

SEO is very important because it helps brand your site in the search engines. The link ITCN provided to the SEO article is excellent and a good place to start.

SEO is a kind of promotion of your site. Link building, on page optimization, social bookmarking etc all those efforts makes your site more visible to people.

SEO is a marketing strategy already though it's not as broad as the what you call 'general marketing' and it's focusing more on search engine rankings. So it'll be better if the approach you'll use is both optimization and web promotions to target great number of your preferred market.

Both are very important, but as for me, having good SERP has a big factor when it comes to sales. So, we need to exert extra effort on SEO, then support it more with website promotion and marketing.

Both are very important to get online visibility & quality traffic to site.

SEO is the most important & inevitable activity for any website because:

    * About 85-90% of internet users find or search new websites thru search engines; so it is very important to have good visibility on search engines to get traffic.

    * Researches show that optimized sites get 5-6 times more clients/conversions then any other affiliate or banner advertising. When an average web surfer finds the site on the top positions in the search engines, he/she considered it to be one of the best sites available over the internet.

    * About 80-85% of Search engine users stop browsing search results on the first two pages. Therefore, only the top (10-20) positions bring significant amount of traffic to the site.

(i have pasted this content from one of my blog post ;) )

However, other search engine marketing techniques & social media optimization is very helpful to get instant visibility.
A combination of both can change the traffic stats & ROI of your site :)

SEO will help you in long run... as even Viral promotion works but everything is for a time span... but a good SEO will keep your traffic constant or higher based on your content updates.

SEO is a way of promoting your site. If you mean non-SEO promotion I think you should do both. Traffic from SERPs pays off big time in the long run.

You need to do on page SEO so that when you promote your site and someone links back to you you'll receive the full benefit from the search engines. My advice is to get your site in good SEO shape then market, market, market trying to get back links from other sites.

There is a very old saying, One should not judge the book by its cover... and the vice versa is also true.. u cant judge a book by its cover.. u see the cover at many places, ads at a lot more places, u pick up the book n turn a few pages get impressed and buy the book and then look inside and read it in detail.. so it goes hand in hand..
all said and done..... for a site SEO is the cover and content is king... content is the offline marketing.. trust me. if that is quality.. once a reader comes to ur site.. he/she has to come back again to read more and more... and u establish a permanent traffic...

    P.S.: sorry if i cited a bad example.. :(

SEO seems to overshadow other online marketing channel due to the fact that SEO is a highly cost effective means of Online Marketing. With SEO there aren't any recurring costs associated with SEO. However, SEO should be 8% of an overall online marketing campaign. You should never put all your eggs in one basket online. For example, if you banked all sales based strickly on SEO what would happen to your revenue if your ranking dropped? Your business would probably be ruined. When using the Internet as part as your marketing initiative it is wise to diversify.

    Why not do both?
There is no law against it.

I would either do both at once, or find a partner and split the work.

Both are important. When worked properly, SEO will result in consistent targetted tarffic but this can take some time. And promotion (paid advertisment) can result in quick traffic which might not last very long. SEO combined with consistent promotion can make your site big.
