Using Emotional Triggers in Sales Copy?

Discussion in 'Copywriting' started by JakeVR, Jun 29, 2008.

I've read a lot about the use of mental triggers and emotional triggers in sales copy. Are there any experts out there who provide information related to these techniques?

I recently found an ad for a free webinar with a psychologist speaking on this topic at: http://eznichecreator.com/emotional-triggers-teleseminar.html

I'd be interested in any feedback you folks could provide on this topic and the webinar.

    Thanks,

    Jake

Well learning about human motivation and psychology and aspirations and so on, helps with making copy better. You need to "know" your targets, their aspirations and motivations.

    You could say

"Buy snappy fire alarm, or your beautiful house may lie in smoking ashes and your cute cuddly baby may die a horrible death in the merciless flames ......"

And you might have some extra people buying your fire alarm. !

I took a Critical Thinking class and part of creating a valid sound argument was the ability to stir emotions in your listeners or readers so that you not only sound credible but your argument is believable. Emotional triggers are not only important in creating sales copy but many companies rely on those emotional triggers to do the selling - regardless of the product.

Think about all of the products and services we have, the best selling sales copy relies on our senses and emotions to create a product people feel they have to have and can't live without. From that the writers and marketing departments create arguments based on those emotional triggers to sell those products.

The senses and emotions are some of the largest selling tools companies have.

Using the word "because" will work a little.

    I learned it practically.

Hmmm not sure how useful that is, there's quite a bit about using NLP in copywriting at the moment, but in my experience you're better off using well-crafted persuasive copy

Here's a good article that might help you....

Well that's one way to promote your seminar, but maybe you should have made a few more posts first to make it look a bit more genuine.

    Erthy,

I agree with you there. I thought it to be a bit spammy myself and at the very least blatant self promotion and because of that did not follow the link to check it out. Jake, you need to get a little more creative.

    WTF?

    Supply <-> Demand

If you can't sell something with a high-demand a low supply, you seriously suck. Scarcity, Social Proof, Anticipation, Desire. All these things trigger people. Look at Wikipedia for the def's.

There are many ways to get to the emotional triggers and it's not a process that is 10 minutes long. However, this tip might get you started in thinking in the right direction.

Think of your benefits. Then take one of those benefits and keep asking, "So what?" until you arrive at an emotional trigger.

    Our protein powder builds muscle.

    So what?

More muscle makes you look better.

    So what?

More muscle makes you look hot to gorgeous babes.

    So what?

You are rewarded more often in the way you like to be rewarded by the female persuasion. (if you get my drift)

    See? Definite emotional trigger.

I highly suggest Triggers by Joe Sugarman. The whole book is about just this thing, and how it relates to copywriting. Joe Sugarman is known for running a hugely successful direct marketing company several years ago. Anyways, I think you can pick it up on Amazon.com for very little, so I would definitely pick it up if I was you.
