Don't expect any precise answers, because a lot of the strength of any spam protection is in holding some things back. If spammers knew how it worked they could take steps to get around it.

A lot of spam has characteristic features, and if you see a lot of it, it's not that hard to recognise patterns.

I was interested in this topic because spamguard is a new thing to me, I read it can actually cause problems as well as cure them? http://spamblocking.blogspot.com/2007/07/spam-guard-your-business.html and http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&q=problem+with+spamguard&btnG=Search although not sure how that would relate to directory submissions?

Its no doubt better than the antispam feature in the script your posting about but if it has problems a new solution needs to be found. So in response to the OP, the best way to deal with spam is to get a system like some other scripts have put in place that are as foolproof as your going to get.

The spam seems to be targeted at the free directories - so why not go paid.

The paid fee need not be expensive eg £10, but would stop a lot of spam as the spammers have no choice but to pay to spam.

The problem then though is you get slated for allegedly being a paid for inclusion, you just can't win. Mind you I'd like to see a lot of the free directories close as they are a waste of space in the first place.

A country is not a race. There are Indians all over the world...

what about the girls, men and women?

Yes, but I use akismet to protect them! Better than blocking an IP range!

Sarah, If I were to call you an American fool, or an Australian idiot, or a Spanish freak...all are racist. The fact is the OP made a racist remark - About.com's Race Relations guide sums it up perfectly - discrimination and prejudice based on race, which is exactly what has happened in this case. No offence to you, but I'm genuinely quite disturbed that moderators do not take a stance to racism on these forums - especially in such illicit ways as this.

    ---Edit---

This thread is now profoundly false, and the thread should be removed from the site as McFox has removed all racist remarks made and therefore, short of being a slagging match, has no purpose. Just my 2 cents;)

I guess I didn't see the original version but and I support what ever action McFox took.

The flip side of the coin is I receive directory submissions for sites that block my access because I have an APNIC IP and that's where spammers come from. They're generally realtor sites that target their local community so it's no biggie, just makes it hard to review their submission!
I don't get huffy about it because I recognise that APNIC countries are responsible for alot of the spam that hits my own inbox!
