PHPBB What?

    Not only DP. At any forum you go too, all the users seem against PHPBB. They talk about vB, SMF or IBP. Why so?

    Everyone has their own opinion. I would take phpBB over SMF/IBP any day.

    I guess it was because of the reputation of phpbb2 and the number of patches and updates it needs. Those that do not patched were easily hacked and hence a notorious name for phpbb. But I must say that their new release phpbb3 has been very good with tons of great features and till now not many security worries.

    why would they hate phpbb? and also for me phpbb3 screw all other FREE boards...

    based on my research, phpbb seems to be the only css board. I laugh my ass off at everybody who has VB installed and even paid to have it SEOed. That's so laughable - not only you had paid for an overpriced script, you also paid to have it SEOed and what do you have - a site that's so table heavy, that your pages don't get indexed properly anyway. Even if you have a PR7 board - spiders will visit you several times a day, but they will still not index your pages properly and most links will not be recognized. PHPBB is the only smart option, it seems. Unless you really don't give a crap about search engine traffic.

    Nope, my prof does not deal with phpbb, he does his research and wrote his papers more.

    I like phpbb and think its the best free board you can get.. The only thing is that VB has more mods to choose from but its aint free :D

    From a security standpoint, phpbb sucks because of the lack of encrypting the md5 hash(password)...

    I don't mind phpBB (I normally get the pre-modded one).. But I would prefer IPB and VB any day.. Just cost too much!

    If I am doing a forum, definitely VB is the choice, if the ROI warrants it. But my forums are normally hobby related, granted that VB is really the King of forums, to me it is not worth spending the money on such software, not that it is no good, just that you cant recover the money as in my case.

    Also I do not use to use the nulled or pirated versions, PHPBB3 seems the obvious choice, although SMF is a very close second.

    The only time I see myself going for an IPB or vBulletin will be when I have $1000 in my PayPal (which seems far off with my account limited)... But myBB is the closest to vBulletin.

    well even today majority of all the discussions forums are running On PHPBB,
    Main reason behind that is its free to use.
    So starters tend to go with it.

    I used phpbb for my civil engineering forum and it got hacked and i lost all my threads and 1000+members :(

    phpbb is great for a free script, vb and ipb are much better since they are paid ;)

    it's pretty easy to figure out :D

    phpbb is the best free script, even though it would be in a tie with SMF :p

    There are so many illegal vb boards out there, and they don't get caught or anything. SO a lot of people actually compare phpbb with a paid board such as vb or ipb.
