So if the keyword phrase "unique collectible wooden toys" (just an example) gets 12,000 google searches a month - would it be smart to buy the url www.uniquecollectiblewoodentoys.com? (if it was available)

Or is a domain name that long just stupid?

I guess you could, but is it easy to remember?

collectiblewoodentoys dot com would be better then add those keyword phrases in your title tag and description area would be more ideal. ;)

Domain name keywords usually helps, however new domain will not help you a lot! My own opinion is that Google is very sensitive on long domains, sometimes they understand this as keyword spamming. I also do not agree that this keyword have 12000 searches a month as we have a similar niche client which is in top 10 in Google UK and do not get more than 30 per month on similar keywords (i mean per 1 keyword)
