I am going to start a blog on paid surveys and will use Clickbank as the affiliate programming, now do you think I should buy hosting for a blog or get a free one at wordpress.com?

Get a domain name, this is the most important as it ensures that all the promotion efforts put in belongs to you. Next get a free hosting with Fantastico so that creating a self hosted wordpress would be easy.

Submitting to directories, social bookmarking... there seems to be thousands of threads on here discussing how to advertise blogs.

If you're looking for long terms gain use your own domain name and host yourself.

That's like asking: "How much can a shop bring in?"

Kind of a silly question :) What kind of shop? Where is the shop? How well is the shop marketed? How much of a market is there for that product? etc etc
