By the end of today Icann - the international net regulator - would have voted on whether to open up domain names. http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/technology/7474889.stm Quote from the article: I'm a bit confused actually just what this means in practice. Can anybody shed any light on the matter?
I think this is a mistake they are making. In any case the major TLD will still be the most used, since people remember them more easily. I wonder how someone could brand himself with one of those esoteric upcoming TLDs...
i don't think is a good decision but is interesting , why isn't good ? because only people with a lot of money will be able to register them if approved
It's been approved guys, news just in from paris. http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/technology/7475986.stm I think this is a major mistake.
its nothing new not the first time this has been done .biz .mobi .info .travel all were touted as the "next big thing" and custom extensions are currently avail, except there was no way to force ISPs to accept them. in the end .com is king when branded, people will go to other places (think craigslist.org del.ico.us etc in their early days) its just gonna be more clutter, making .com that much more valuable.
When will old blokes in suits just leave the internet alone? Who would register a .ldn or .nyc instead of a .com? Very few local businesses, making it pointless. Just a way for some fatcats to make more money.
so as individual i can register only .george ? .joshn ? .smith ? ( my own name ) ? i'm not able to register .geo .jos or .smi ? and i must show a "business plan and technical capacity" ? what this thing means ?
Hello it is clearly defined in the Wall Street Journal this morning. It will cost you between 300,000 and 500,000 USD to do this and you have to be approved for the catagory still. I would not loose sleep over this as there are these .com thoughts in the article as well. We think this is just a money making ICANN plan, for large governments and mega corps. We would love to be .viper but we are fine with the .com.
I wouldn't mind .shops for my ecommerce site....actually now that I think of it more .shops becomes more of a bloody brilliant idea. lol
Alright could some one briefly explain what's going on so could we create new TLD's in our own desire ?
i think .xxx is a good idea ( so people who want to go there know what there going to see, and those who want to avoid it can. If i ran an e-commerce site i wouldnt want a .shop as surely its over-blantently informing the user someones going to try and sell them something. Just my thoughts...
dont think people are adverse to buying..they are not...people LOVE to shop, they just hate to be "sold" ebay.shop electronics.shop computers.shop itunes.shop music.shop get it? people would definitely go there, with the purpose of "shopping"
There's a big debate with this one. In short, the industry is obviously not behind it. Why would you bother switching if you've already got very good and expensive premium adult domain names? You're also going to be automatically banned by every web filter which is bad for business, plus a lot of adult sites are about discretion, .xxx strips that away.
I read that the board already approved to register the brands as generic top-level domain names (TLDs) such as example Microsoft can register .msn and Google for .goog http://networkworld.com/news/2008/062608-board-opens-way-for-new.html
.ebay is wanted, Singapore also really wanted this to happen, and other companies are hoping for their own TLD. Personally I think it's necessary but I hope the limit is set somewhere, and it seems the cost of creating a new one will ensure that.
