How to stop the SPAM on your directory - a good & working solution!

    Hello boys,

    Do you own a free web directory? do you have problems with the spam ? want to stop it in less than 3 minutes? Try adding this code on your directory!

    Step 1:
    Open templates/your-template-name/header.tpl where:
    your-template-name is the theme you are using on your phpLD

    Step 2:

    Open header.tpl & find:
    <head>

    Step 3:

    Just after the <head> add the following code:
    IN stands from INDIA.

    Do the same with all the countries from where you receive hard SPAM.Copy the entire code just below the existing one, and change the country code as you like.Now..you probably will say that they will use proxies. Yes, they will do, but their massive submitters don't have the proxy setting. Also, a proxy can be easilly banned & it usually works slower.
    This method will prevent 80%+ from your daily headache. You will also get spammed by individuals, but at least not with a whole list daily.

    Also...the green URL, that is www.Google.com, is the place where they will be redirected. Use here any website you want, but noy yours.

    For other directory scripts... it is the same... place the code.. between <head>&</head>

    If you have problems installing it, PM me and I will do it for free for you.

    This is going to prevent the traffic from India? you dont want to do that, what about the genuine webmasters?

    Also a little harsh and offensive to suggest 80% of spam comes from India.

    I get some spam from various countries but id not point the finger like that at any particular country.

    Considering India is an expanding, growing, probably going to kick the wests butt country in the near future i dont think its wise to offend or suggest or to ban traffic from the country.

    Why not direct them to a porn site?
    Collateral damage is sometimes worth it.

    Or use a script that is virtually impossible to spam with automatic submissions. No directory script will ever be impossible to 'spam' manually, after all, it doesn't take a genius to fill in a form properly and take the required actions. My vote for anti-spam features goes to the phpLynx directory script, try out the free version, you'll love it (and not just for the anti-spam measures!).

    i had to close down my pr6 directory to new submissions two weeks ago because the spam was too much and 99% of it came from india from about 40 ips but i would never block based on country.

    Everyone knows phpLD is susceptible to receiving spam submissions from automatic software - especially version 2.X - perhaps you should consider at least upgrading to a newer build or take advantage of another script?

    it's true that most of spams come from india,
    at least for my web directories,
    but not all indians are spammers.
    is it a smart way to internet marketing?
    besides, is it safe of this script?

    Just adding my penny's worth here.

    Saying that all SPAM comes from India is a little harsh IMO.

    Most SPAM comes from a common IP number. Why not use a script like indexscript that allows you to filter the submissions by IP# and then ban or block that IP#?

    Block the spammers and not the honest webmasters whereever they may be from.

    I'm absolutely disgusted that you can be so racist here, how can you say on open forum that we all know all spam comes from India, disgusting. Modern scripts should be able to cater for spam, simple as that, no need for the nonsense you posted.

    Any source to quote that 80% of the spam came from India? I am not Indian but I feel such racial stereotyping isn't good for anyone.

    I am from India and I don't like it a bit that the guy can post such racial stereotyped messages in the forum and doesn't get banned even after 8 hours have passed after his post.

    If you can't build/buy/integrate a good spam guarding solutions; don't go about telling the world about your incompetence. There are a lot of directories owners who have already banned Indian IPs because of this foolish mentality and it's unfortunate that these guys are now making their hatred public.

    I get a lot of submissions from Indian IPs on my directory but many of them should be directory submitters and seo companies doing submissions for their clients.

    Indeed. When I owned zorg directory I never got any spam thanks to his mod. Except for a few romanians trying to get a free listing for their rent a car sites :D

    What this thread needs OP needs to understand is that there are spammers from all walks of life and from ALL countries. They may use IP's from one particular country to do so but believe me they are from everywhere. Sadly this is now turning into a promoteamod thread that went badly wrong.

    Well, most of my off-topic submissions do come from IPs based in India, with Peru a close second. That's my experience. However I don't subscribe to banning entire countries, because that's using a sledgehammer to crack a nut.

    I think the problem is YMC that India is one awful big continent and yes, I've seen a lot of spammers come from that geographic location as well. The problem I had was the way it was inferred that it was solely this Country to blame which we know for sure isn't the case, although I would question that in the directory industry as it does seen to be the vogue at the moment.

    Let's not tar everyone with the same brush though, no doubt there are many good as there are bad. Easiest solution, get a spam system to prevent anyone getting through, saves a lot of time, trouble and accusations.
