Hey Jamie Jim Jam, you have no doubt heard the expression people in glass houses should not throw stones. Do you remember these gems?
    • Whether its a coffee shop in Alaska to a bakery in Budapest, to the most obscure of results, we make it as relevant a search as possible with our integrated regional specific directory section
    • Internets primary Family Safe Searching system
    • Army of volunteers.
I think I detect an odour of bovine excrement there as well.

Prove to the contrary then I'll gracefully bow to you. That will be the day the moon will really be made of cheese, and you will really know what your talking about.

Now please get off the thread unless you have something constructive to say, if you don't please STOP TROLLING.

    Benefits of Directories are:

    1. Faster
    2. Advantage of being authorities
    3. Can be adapted more easily than Bot-driven search engines

    Disadvantages:

    1. Too many General subject ones
    2. Prone to spamming both automatic and manual
    3. Hard to build in the early stages
    4. Tough to stand out in the crowd
    5. Trust in directories is at an all time low
    6. Many have bad reputations
    7. Difficult to maintain long-term
    8 Associated with Crime
    9. Few deliver average results traffic-wise

Ahh ok, Associated with Crime, extraction of email addresses for one. The directory owners are some of the biggest spammers on the web (and I'll gladly prove this), this happened to me a while back - on submitting to what I thought was a useful directory link, 3 days later I got 1 email every day for an entire year from this guy

Secondly, directory owners then sell these emails to Criminal gangs eg Nigerian letter scammers, porn rings, drug and gambling websites etc.

This trashes this industry and it stinks. :(

How are directories associated with crime?

Simple, crime gangs set up a directory to get your email. Once they have a big enough list, this is either used by them to sell illegal products eg: Black bank notes scam, or the list is sold on for thousands of pounds to some unsuspecting business or webmaster. It's a very common thing now.

The objective isn't to make money from the directory itself - the value is in the contact info.

Are you referring to the public enemy number 1 directories which send you more spam and scam emails than you could possibly imagine - the master of spam, iEntry? ;)

iEntry is a major headache with their constant sending of newsletters - I have had major trouble with those guys, but they aren't criminals. Yeah, they never unsubscribe anyone, plus they add you to more mail junk

There are about 4 or 5 fairly well-known directories with a bad rep for sending junk mail about, basically they sell their sponsored listings. One email always says "Directory Listing notes".

I'll do some digging for the names, and post them here.

    Speak of the devil:

-- Small Business Directory Network iEntry, Inc.--
iEntry, Inc. 2549 Richmond Rd. Lexington KY, 40509
© 2008 iEntry, Inc. All Rights Reserved Privacy Policy Legal

    - they just sent me an email.

Excellent point EK and very true. Many of the claims and dubious marketing methods we see here and in other places would be consumer fraud in most jurisdictions.

See behaviour like junk mail en-mass isn't doing them any favours, and it's tough enough competing with the SE's, without upsetting potential clients with spam

Ok, the info Ientry sends isn't crap or anything, but when people unsubscribe, they should do that right. I take it that IEntry are quite a big company yes? So they have a responsibility to run a clean spam-free business yes....

I'm all for a little emailing, but these guys are bad.

I click Unsubscribe and e-mail them almost every 3rd e-mail I receive from them. Which is approximately twice every day :(
