Huh? that's an old virus. And most anti virus can already remove that kind a virus. I guess even a FREE anti virus like AVG can even remove that. What kind a anti virus you have?
did you try McAfee ?? It worked for me when I tried it a year ago to remove Brontok from my winxp sp2
Is your antivirus up to date? It should clean the virus. But if because of some reasons your antivirus cannot remove it, there's a better way than to format it: remove your harddisk and slave it to other computer with up to date antivirus then scan it, this should make your harddisk clean. Or try this steps: 1. Download Hijackthis 2. Run it on your pc / Scan 3. Find HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies, DisableRegedit=1 4. Click FIX CHECKED, this will recover the regedit that has been disabled by the virus 5. Now run regedit 6. Find this value: bron-spizaetus, tok-cirrhatus, empty.pif and delete them all 7. Find HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows \CurrentVersion\Policies\Explorer and delete it or change string to "0" 8. Above step will enable RUN, SEARCH and FOLDER OPTION 9. Now search any .exe with icon of folder and delete them. 10. Update your AV and scan your PC Hope that helps, but then there are may version of brontok, those step might be different for any other version.
Even if the virus is removed by my anti-virus programs, I always reformat and reinstall afterwards anyways. Seen too many instances where it tells you a virus was removed, but it hangs on somewhere and comes back to haunt later on.
yeah there are some kind of viruses called time bomb virus, which perform their funciton at specific time, or specific interval of time. I suggest you to install mcAffee , scan your pc, it will repair files with virus, follow raining blood's instruction, then if you have more than 512 mb ram, stick with mcaffee, else uninstall it and install avast anti virus ( after scanning with macafee) avast will perform a virus scan before your pc boots ( before welcome screen) it will then protect your pc from viruses
The best way would be using kaspersky, they give you 30 days fully functional trial, in that time you can get rid of brontok or whatever Hope that helps
