While it may not be the best thing, I believe it should not be neglected. It is one of the way to build backlinks and every backlinks count.

I do have some success with it, and being a directories submissions provider, some of my clients have confirmed their result and that it work.

Directory submission might be an old tactic of Off-page optimization but this is still an effective way of link building. Directory submission can still provide our site a quality backlinks.

I guess it can build links, but test it out for yourself. Use one of the (many) "submit your link to 300 directories for free!!" services and then see how many of those backlinks actually show up in google's webmaster tools. You would be lucky if 1 of them showed up.

Yes. Free directories can give quality backlinks if you are submitting to right category and using many anchor text and descriptions. Overall quality of directory backlinks has gone down but that's not true for all directories :)

I submit to free directories often. Directory submission has been a big part (but not the only part) in securing about 15,000 links to the website. Each link counts, even if only a very, very small amount individually. Add them all up and you've got something worthwhile.

Directories is a big factor in my opinion because I am definitely seeing results on one of my site that I am optimizing by simply using nofollow backlinks.

Directory submission is a great source of one way link. It still works, but takes a lot of time. I prefer submitting site manually to free directories. I would suggest that you use your anchor text when submitting. They can still provide quality back links. And to add up, don't use automated submission. :p

I still do free directory submissions, but the best directories to submit to are paid and niches.

Yes I think it still works and is one of the cheapest way to get started on your link building campaign. Once you finish submitting on free directories also spend some money on quality directories at BOTW, JoeAnt and so on.

I would agree with you one the 'niche directory' front. But I don't think paid directories are the best directories :) There are a LOT of junk paid directories out there.

I wouldn't bother... Google is very clever these days at only picking out quality incoming links... and yes, there are quality directories... there's just not many of them...

If you have spare time and man power then you can go for directory submission. Some time directory links also help to gain link popularity. But the share is very low.

It still works but takes lot of time. Once you submit your link in free directories definitely you are capable of getting good back links continuously because the directory site will take your link it will automatically submit to other directories belong to that sites, So this will help you in getting more quality links.
