I plan on starting a video streaming website and I have some questions: 1. How much monthly bandwidth is required for an average-sized video streaming site? 2. What is required for fairly quick loading (like Youtube)? 3. About how much will bandwidth cost monthly for an average-sized streaming site? I think I need a dedicated server, but maybe a VPS is sufficient? I'm new to hosting so I need information! I need to know because I'm not sure if I have enough money for this. Thanks.
1) Depends on the videos you plan on streaming. If you are doing something like pron you'll need alot of bandwidth. You can do the simple math: Size of video = 100MB # of Expected View per Month = 1,000 Expected Bandwidth = 100MB x 1,000 Views = 1,000,000MB or 1 TB. 2) SPEED. Both from a hardware perspective and internet connection perspective. Don't try it on anything slower than a T3 connection (~45Mbps) at the very least. 3) Depends on the host. Some of the big hosting companies will give you 1-3TB in monthly bandwidth as part of their hosting package. I would recommend a dedicated server, VPS is shared with a few other people which can cause you problems down the road. Expect to pay $300-$400 for a decent dedicated server per month. So put aside about $4000-$5000 for a year of hosting.
Thanks; I don't think I can afford it. Maybe a few years from now.. How much does it cost approximately per 100MB video view? I know companies don't charge by that, but it'd be handy to know.
That would be difficult to say precisely. I would guess $0.05 - $0.10, but who knows. That would take alot more math and brain power than I'm willing to commit to this thread right now
Heheh alright, thanks for helping out. But according to your estimate, video sites have to charge at least $50 CPM just to stay neutral
Heh, I've seen higher rates to be honest. Why not head over to youtube and see if they have a media kit lying around in their advertisers section. Maybe their CPM rates will give you a better idea.
I came across this: http://www.marktrefgarne.com/liverail/youtube-advertising/ and this http://www.webvideoreport.com/case_studies/2008/03/webvideo_adprice_survey_take_t.php The average is about $25 CPM apparently.
alright you two, stop hogging the thread. There should be no threads that are just 2 people. I'm here to break that up. Now....do you have any other hosting questions?
But I like the attention! lol Besides, I run a hosting company and it's apparently good practice to communicate with the commoners once in a while
