First of all the categories where you post your link into must be relevant to the content of your site. If you find niche directories for the domain you have even better. This is in short words what you need to know for beginning.

My opinion is that links that are easiest to get are the ones that the search engines give the least value to (ie submitting to directories are the easiest links to get). IMHO, the links that are the hardest to get are the ones that the search engines give the most value to (eg a freely given contextual link from a high authority site). Dosen't mean that directory links are useless, its just IMHO, they do not have a lot of value.

Directories will help increase your PR. I submitted to around 1000 free directories with PR from 0 to 6, and got a boost from PR1 to PR4.

Use the search. This thread question has been asked many times in the past week, additional to a few other hundred times over the past few years.

The keywords you use in your link text from the directories to your site will bump up in the SERPs.

well, 1 of the main problems is that more then 70% of the directories out there are not SEO-friendly, so if you would pull some list from the net and start submitting, at least 80% of your effort will be wasted ...

don't fool yourself ... order from a professional, the prices are so low, no way you can do it yourself better or cheaper
