Being accused of 'spamming' from Wikipedia

For example, on the Buffy page, the are quite a few web sites listed that are fan sites located at the bottom of the page ('external links') this does not include the basic links (TV.com profile and the IMDb.com profile). I've added my site and I've been accused of 'spamming' the page. What gives?

Sometimes, it is really about your quality of sites and also, some terms or pages are heavily guarded by hard core fans of the term, making you hard to break in.

They frown at anything that had even the slightest hint of commercialism in it. I guess the best way is to get a non profit dot.org name put your contents inside and resubmit :)

Promoting through wiki has become impossible, even for quality sites if there somewhat commercial in nature.

Just having a site related to a topic in wikipedia is not reason enough to add a link to the page. Wikipedia is not a directory, but an encyclopedia that cites its information sources...

Yeap and I tried but after reading through Wiki criteria and also looking at what they had missed and what I could add on, I found that my sites can really add on nothing of value to Wiki, so basically I give up my idea. Maybe one day when I become famous, I can add my name but that's about all :)

My site does have an .org

No, I know that. I have a gallery of photos that no one else has, which I feel makes my site stand out from the rest.

It's a drunk in a bar giving their opinion.
It really doesn't deserve it's 'encyclopedia' reputation, it gets edited for a jokes or self-promotion, or because someone's gor an axe to grind all the time, and as the OP noted, there is absolutely no consistency in what is regarded as a 'source' as what's regarded as 'spam'

The absolute best way to get your link on, is to write an informative article, add it to your site and then contribute a paragraph and identify your site as the source.

Make sure the information is accurate.

The wikipedia editors (heavy handed admins) like the links to go to popular sites. If your site is just starting out, and you put a link, chances are the link will be removed and you will receive a warning.

Right after I opened my site, I found an article on wikipedia that was directly related to the content of my site, and I added a link at the bottom of the wikipedia page. A few hours later I received a message to stop spamming and the link had been removed. If I put the link back I would be banned from wikipedia. After asking the wikipedia moderator "why" the link was removed (after all, my site dealt with the exact topic of the article) I was told that the links on the articles should to go respected sites that have been open for several years.

So if you just open a site, chances are your links will be removed. But if you have a popular site, with lots of post, articles or traffic, then the link might be allowed.

Wikipedia is stupid. In my niche I know a hell of a lot and often see mistakes. When I correct them or add more info, they just change it back. When I do an interview and use my site as a source they just say I'm spamming. Yet I find they add my site for pointless things that my site isn't the original source for. Weird.

Thanks for the info. It sure seemed like a good idea, though.

My site was able to get on a Wikipedia page within 2 months of it being started up. If your site has a professional looking design, lots of content/articles, and is somewhat popular, you will have better odds of having your site kept as a link on a Wikipedia page.

Wikipedia is a good idea, in fact it is a very good idea.

But you should build up your site and get some good content. After you get things built up, then go back and put your link back on the page.

When my links were removed I asked the moderator why other links to sites like mine were left in place. The reply was that those other sites have been online for several years. The other sites also had a reputation of being quality, informative sites. So when you get your site built up, you will have something to argue with the moderator about.

If there are already links on the page you wanted to add yours to. Check the sites out and see how much information they have on them. That will set a goal for you to reach.
