Alright!!! I have been in the proxy business for some while. Now starting a bigger proxy network. Somewhat usage of 800gigs to 1 TB. People say that i should buy a VPS. But i don't know what a VPS is. I have never run a VPS. I saw many threads at dp asking for VPS etc. They had many systems CentOS, i don't know what. I just want to know that should i do. Are VPS like the normal cpanels or lxadmin. what should be the specifications, HD, RAM, i don't know what. Please help me out here.

    THANKS

A VPS is just like a dedicated server but it's much cheaper. You can choose your own OS and control panel. Most providers would offer most linux OS for free, while Windows would come at an extra monthly fee. Control panels such as cpanel/web host manager would also come at an extra fee from most providers. LX Admin should be free.

If you are able to use up to 1TB of bandwidth per month and you want to run cPanel, I recommend at least 512mb ram (minimal). 756 - 1024mb ram with at least 2GB burstable is recommended.

If you're sites are using so much transfer then a VPS is definitely a good choice for you to move onto before getting an actual dedicated server. If you need quality VPSes then pay a visit to EpicLayer.com :)

A VPS is just like shared hosting but it is usualy on a more "beefy" dedcated server and you do not share the server with 100+ people. Also you get full root access just as it were a dedicated server.

VPS is where you get a part of the server's overall resources reserved to you, and you get root access just as if you were actually running a dedicated server. The good part is, that you won't have to worry about the entire server going down but rather just maintain your own part of it. Burstable RAM means how much of the total ram of the server you can have. It does help out somewhat in case you need it although it is not always guaranteed available like dedicated ram is.

If you need a VPS, IwhiC is a good provider, or check out www.wdservers.com as they are very well known too :)

Another advantage of a VPS (as chandan123 stated), you get full access to the machine. What this means is that you get root access. What is root access? Root access would be the main admin or "controller" of the server. You'll be able to install modules/addons and other 3rd party software to the server as long as your host allows it. Most hosts do not allow IRC, whether it be a VPS or an fully dedicated server.

Forgot to mention, the amount of RAM (memory) assigned to your VPS should be fully dedicated. The "burstable" amount of memory is the memory in which you are able to access but for a limited amount of time only. Consider burstable memory as a "backup" for peak sessions. Having dedicated memory, disk space, and bandwidth gives you a well advantage over any shared or reseller hosting package. Your resources are never shared and only you will be able to utilize them at your own will.

You should be able to choose which control panel and OS you want when you sign up for a VPS. In most cases, the OS and control panel is pre-installed before the information is delivered to you.

Well there are many different companies offering setup's like that.

Linux, you'll want CentOS as it's industry standard for linux servers
Control Panel, LXAdmin is fine, but you'll only be able to host 40 domains as that's all you get in the free version

For space/bandwidth/CPU/RAM/Burst RAM there are MANY companies with different plans/prices and I'm sure that they would be happy to do you a custom plan too if you asked :)

    Good luck!

I'm guessing you mean 1GB RAM?

200MB Hard Drive will not be enough, as the operating system itself takes up 350MB+, then you've got apache, MySQL, PHP, LXAdmin etc on top of that. So I'm guessing 5-10GB Hard Drive. The bandwidth, 800GB is quite high but it's do-able. 1GB RAM with 2GB Burst is also quite high. So your looking at around $20-50 per month :)
