I've begun learning Flex. I'm choosing to learn it over the alternatives because it compiles to flash which is widely supported and because of the tools can you use with flex and air which I am already familiar with. I also believe Adobe will be the winner in the future of RIA so it makes my investment in their technology more sound.

Yes, it does seem that Flash is supported on most desktops. Though the Java vm may not be supported on all desktops -- most browsers today, support the framework. The really interesting thing-- Flash is built with Java--- right?

Umm. I know Java is part of it somehow but I'm not sure how. Do SWF files require Java and if so are the dependencies bundled with the player? I don't know. If Flash requires a Java install to run then that negates my previous argument for using Flex.
