Just visit the url dmoz.org and you will learn a lot about it. If your site is included in the dmoz directory, you stand to gain a lot of visitors from there apart from getting some link juice.

DMOZ is just another place to get a good link from. It helps your SEO as much as a good link from any other site.

Visitors wise I would doubt it, previously I do visit dmoz a lot for information. But now with Google being so dominant and accurate, it isn't necessary to visit dmoz anyway.

One thing I would agree is the PR backlink it provides that would be good for your web site. Also some directory owners tend to draw sites from Dmoz to fill up their directories, this in turn helps your site gets more backlinks.

Having said that, being listed in DMOZ is a big challenge.

Everyone wants to get in the ODP and its not easy! You will notice not long after being added to the ODP a google serps increase... well I did anyway :)
Its the place to be! make sure your site rocks and has plenty of unique content! also its very important to get your submission Title and description right when applying to the ODP.
    Its worth it!

Google reps said for best results you should get indexed in

    Dmoz
    Yahoo Directory
    &
    Best of the web (http://botw.org/)

If you can get in all 3 then your site will hold a lot of weight in google.

It does not help much. I am not sure about the boost in PR since I was listed after the last update. However, it has brought me almost nothing in terms of traffic. It may help if I go to sell my site but it has not meant much to me so far except being able to say I got listed.

Besides, getting a listing in DMOZ you also get a link in Google's directory, which is also a wonderful directory to be in.

Abiut 3000 other directories (of which G is just one) use the DMOZ database for their directories. Because of the dup content filter is probably doubtful that you get credit for many, if any, of them.

Umm, no actually Googles directory is a clone of DMOZ. So its just mirroring DMOZ not using DMOZ data as part of its directory. To my knowledge (only Google can say, and I won't hold my breath on them divulging that information ;) ) DMOZ is no more important to their search results than any other quality link. Don't make it out to be more than it really is, or you will only end up more frustrated.

Shadow575 is right, don't get your hopes up. Having a link in DMOZ won't hurt your site but it likely won't do much to help it either.

Part of the confusion comes from the fact that 10 years ago DMOZ was a very important place to have a link - but that was 10 years ago. Things are different now but the original information is still out on the web and people don't realize that it's so out of date.

Also people don't realize that you split pr with the other links on the page so even if you are listed on a pr 4 page if there are 50 other sites listed there as well it doesn't leave much juice to go around.

As far as traffic from the directory itself, you won't see any. I've had sites with up to six listings and the traffic was no more than a handfull of visitors each month from the directory itself.

hmmm and as far as having 4 million sites listed, who knows, maybe they do maybe they don't.

DMOZ is famous for making up figures. It also says 80,207 editors - but they really only have around 7500. They say the 80,207 stands for all the editors who have ever worked on the site.

So maybe the 4,588,952 sites means sites that were submitted - not sites that were listed. Who knows.

Interesting, perhaps it should read 1 billion sites considered, 4 million listed.
