Never say never. I believe mySQL will overtake Oracle in the future. Look at Microsoft Windows vs Linux 10 years ago. Linux was a experimental, a toy OS. Look what happen now, who can predict the future? I use mySQL most of the time, never touch Oracle before. My view is biased, but the main point is keep your mind open. Don't be too narrow minded that it won't happen.
SQl is way better than oracle...as there arent any problem of exporting file when ever new versions like I had a big headache last semester when the I had upgrade my college project from oracle 9i to 10 g...... gross plz take my advice use sql unless u are working in CIA
It's funny how you guys are saying SQL is better when at the beginning of this thread people were saying Oracle was better.
It depends you needs...... MySQL is simpler to install, administer, work with, etc. compared to Oracle... People think that Oracle is slower than MySQL and it comes true to some corners of usage. You can save a little 1 millisecond and risk your data integrity. Oracle features, scalability, functionnality, transactions, etc are far forward of mysql.... the price too! You can also have a better opensource database engine: PostgreSQL... I'm a DBA and work with each ones, my ranking over these 3 is: 1- Oracle ($$) 2- PostgreSQL 3- MySQL... No more time to try others! It's like everything: it depends a vast number of factors.
There are many reasons why it will never overtake although YouTube uses it as the main database: 1. Not ACID compliant 2. Security 3. It's not enterprise-ready. 4. It's Free (Yeah, that word hurts in enterprises). 5. Less Support The list can go on...
mysql vs oracle? hahaha... in absolute terms, there is no comparison - oracle wins hands down. however, when you consider the needs of each user, there are areas where mysql wins due to the fact that it is free...
I get it. So it is really reared to what exactly the user needs. But in all honesty, you guys are saying that Oracle is relatively more powerful.
It is for what will you use the database engine. Oracle is better in banking, large projects while mysql is better at web programming
MySQL can be completely ACID compliant if setup using the correct hardware and the correct configuration. For anyone to say that it's impossible for MySQL to catch Oracle is simply ridiculous. Google was a crappy project a few year ago, everyone said they would never catch Yahoo, and now they're not in the same league. Anytime you get a user and development base in the millions, you can do amazing things. MySQL most definitely has the opportunity to catch the bigger players. At their current state, they're not in a position to do it, but it's definitely possible, and is more than likely probable in the future. MySQL needs to develop their clustering and multi-core processing before they can ever content on the level of MSSQL or Oracle. They also need to direct their development in the area of large scale database development. Once they can meet the needs for large scale applications, it will probably start getting adapted more by large organizations.
I know Microsoft SQL Server 2009 and new release of Performance Point Server is coming up from a professional perspective BI (business intellingence) or ETL Tooling like Oracle Warehouse Builder, Informatica, Microsoft SSIS/SSRS/SSAS, Abinitio and more are used in every sector. It is more compentence leading; it is correct mysql is more used in webenabled programming enviroments like PHP, .NET, ASP.NET, Java etc. and RDBMS like oracle more in ERP and enteprise solutions but not only banking. Also retailing, logistics and pharming, public is using alot of this kind of systems.
I have worked in Oracle and SQL server 2005. The current version of Oracle is 10g (11g just coming out). Even Oracle 7.0 (came out in the mid 90s) is better than SQL Server 2005 - not kidding! Like I mentioned before, MYSQL is lovable database (I love MYSQL) but Oracle is in totally different league. Current DB ranking is: Oracle DB2 SQL Server ...
Looking for what kind of solution or what kind of purpose?? I dont think its as simple as that... customers also look at pricing, sizing, security, reliable, functionality... more thing like that. All clients have familair solutions but specific wishes which need to match also with the already exisiting IT infrastructure. Choice made in the past can still hurt when cleaning up/updating your companies IT architecture. Which platform is for most companies a strategic choice for a mininal a couple of years ROI depending on size and markets. Oracle 11g rocks but i am going to put my money on SQL SERVER 2009 also for large caps in serveral markets worldwide.
the mysql innoDB technology was bought by oracle and i thought oracle would not want mysql grow too fast than oracle
This discussion is like PHP vs ASP vs .NET vs. Coldfusion...and so on ... It really depends on what are you using for...
I think mySql is good for web-based application. oracle can e used for other thinks. Just my opinion.
