It's a case of do not link to bad sites from your site, or google will not like it.

If they link to you there is little to nothing you can do about it, but google won't ban you for someone else linking to your site, as its beyond your control.

You can't. But its not a problem. Only you linking to a bad neighborhood is a problem. If bad neighbourhoods linking to your site can casue a problem then we would all spend your time submitting our competitors sites to them --- ever wonder why we don't waste our time on that?
Too late - Google update backlinks internally on a daily basis, so those links have already been factored in.

it may harm you a little, but today there is nothing you can do about it. I had the same experience as i got linked from spammy adult websites and my rankings dropped and I couldn't do anything to fight it. Thats the way it works now... its sad but its true. Google pays attention to the factors that are ridiculous... thats the reality and its sad.
And about people who says its impossible to sabotage a site I can say that you are totally wrong!!!!!!

How do you know that they dropped for that reason and it was not coincidental? (eg Google could have just turned a knob on the weighting of certain factors at the same time).

This is exactly the reason that Google doesn't ban people for incoming links, because somebody else is typically the one doing it.

I suggest you don't worry about such links. They can't harm you.

If backlinks from bad sites used to harm other sites, then people would place their competitors links on such sites, in order to get them penalize.

You can't control people from placing links on their sites.

It's going to be a problem only if you are going to get links in thousands from bad sites (drug/link farms etc.,)

Why do people continue to post this sort of rubbish. ITS NOT A PROBLEM! If 1000''s of links from link farms hurt, then we would all be submitting our competitors sites!

It's not a problem... Google won't ban your website if some other site is linking to your site, you can't control who will or is linking to you, other wise you will build those links for the #1 competitive website.
